Trump aide Walt Nauta once more postpones plea in Jack Smith case.
Body Man and Co-Defendant Delay Plea in Trump Indictment Case
Body man and co-defendant Walt Nauta, who is facing charges alongside former President Donald Trump, has once again delayed entering a plea. This comes two weeks after Trump pleaded not guilty to the classified documents indictment brought by special counsel Jack Smith.
Nauta, who appeared in court with Trump in mid-June, received a two-week extension to find a local attorney in Florida. However, his lawyer Stanley Woodward stated on Tuesday that Nauta still hadn’t obtained counsel in Florida, resulting in another delay of his arraignment until July 6.
Weather Hinders Nauta’s Travel
Nauta’s lawyer explained that his client was unable to travel from New Jersey to Florida due to inclement weather.
Charges Faced by Nauta
Nauta is facing six criminal counts, including conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding and concealing documents, and making false statements.
Attorney General Defends Indictment
Attorney General Merrick Garland has defended the indictment of Trump, stating that all proper regulations were followed. He also emphasized the integrity of special counsel Jack Smith in bringing the charges.
Nauta Stands by Trump
Nauta has remained loyal to Trump, accompanying him on campaign swings in Georgia and North Carolina after the indictment. However, a judge has ruled that discussions about the case must go through their respective attorneys.
Trump’s Support for Nauta
Trump has publicly backed Nauta, referring to him as a “wonderful man” and accusing the special counsel of trying to destroy his life. Trump has vehemently denied the charges against him and has pleaded not guilty.
Upcoming Trial
The trial, presided over by Judge Aileen Cannon, is initially scheduled to begin on August 14. However, the actual trial date is likely to be pushed back to December 11, as requested by the Justice Department.
Allegations of Prosecutorial Misconduct
Nauta’s lawyer has reportedly filed a letter alleging prosecutorial misconduct by the Justice Department’s chief of the counterintelligence section. However, no further comments have been made regarding this matter.
Overall, the case continues to unfold, with Nauta and Trump facing serious charges and the legal proceedings progressing slowly.
