Arraignment of Trump aide Walt Nauta delayed.
Former President Donald Trump’s valet, Walt Nauta, had his court appearance postponed due to unexpected travel disruptions.
Nauta’s lawyer, Stanley Woodward, explained to the judge during a brief hearing in Miami that his client was stuck in Newark, New Jersey, after his flight to Florida was canceled due to storms.
Woodward also requested an extension for Nauta to retain a Florida lawyer for the case.
Despite the delay, Woodward emphasized that Nauta is taking the charges he’s facing “very seriously.”
Nauta is accused of conspiring with Trump to hide classified documents at Mar-a-Lago that federal authorities wanted returned.
The arraignment has been rescheduled for July 6.
‘Trying to Destroy His Life’
Nauta, a Navy veteran and former close aide to Trump, gained attention when he and the former president were indicted on charges related to the classified documents probe.
The federal indictment charges Trump with 37 felony counts, including violating the federal Espionage Act and obstructing justice. Nauta faces six felony counts as a co-conspirator.
Prosecutors allege that Nauta moved boxes at Trump’s Florida estate and lied to investigators about it.
In response to the indictment, Trump released a video statement asserting his innocence and stating that the charges won’t stop him from running for president.
He also took to social media to denounce Nauta’s indictment, claiming that the FBI and DOJ are corrupt and attempting to destroy Nauta’s life.
During the investigation, prosecutors allegedly tried to persuade Nauta to testify against Trump, but he refused.
Indictment Details
The indictment reveals that Trump stored hundreds of classified documents in cardboard boxes at Mar-a-Lago, which was visited by tens of thousands of people after he left the White House.
The documents were found in various locations around the resort, including a ballroom, a bathroom, an office space, a storage room, and Trump’s bedroom.
When a grand jury subpoenaed the records, Trump attempted to obstruct the investigation.
