Many federal agency email addresses are sending out-of-office messages that blame Democrats for the government shutdown, with some at the Department of Education reportedly being changed without the employees’ consent.
Multiple furloughed Education Department employees have reported that their out-of-office messages had been changed without their consent, with the new messages blaming Democratic senators for the government shutdown.

The reports come as the Small Business Administration advised its employees to blame Senate Democrats for the shutdown in their away emails as well, providing a template for their staff.
“I am out of office for the foreseeable future because Senate Democrats voted to block a clean federal funding bill (H.R. 5371), leading to a government shutdown,” the SBA template message read.
When the Washington Examiner reached out to the Department of Education for comment on the reports regarding their employee’s out-of-office messages, the Washington Examiner received an out-of-office reply blaming Democrats.
“Thank you for contacting the press team. On September 19, 2025, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5371, a clean continuing resolution. Unfortunately, Democrat Senators are blocking passage of H.R. 5371 in the Senate which has led to a lapse in appropriations. Due to the lapse in appropriations, we are currently in furlough status. We will respond to emails once government functions resume,” the Education Department reply said.
The Washington Examiner received out-of-office messages blaming Democrats for the shutdown from the White House press office, the Department of Agriculture press office, the State Department press office, and the Education Department press office. The Department of Housing and Urban Development press office’s away email stated that “the Radical Left has shut down the government.”

Federal agency websites, such as HUD’s, have also blasted messages across the top of their home pages, likewise blaming the shutdown on Democratic lawmakers and the “Radical Left.”
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, called for an investigation into the Trump administration’s use of federal websites to leverage GOP talking points on the shutdown Thursday.
