Trump admin working to prosecute CNN for promoting ICE tracker

The article discusses Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s announcement regarding efforts to potentially prosecute CNN for promoting an app called ICEBlock, which alerts users to nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities. This details surfaced after CNN reported on the app, which has gained over 20,000 users, particularly in areas with heightened deportation activities. Noem expressed her concerns during a press conference, claiming that CNN’s promotion of the app encourages individuals to evade law enforcement operations.

She emphasized that they are collaborating with the Department of justice to investigate if CNN’s actions could be deemed illegal. This call for prosecution comes amidst ongoing discussions about the negative implications of such reporting on law enforcement’s ability to operate effectively. President Trump also chimed in, advocating for accountability from CNN over their coverage of intelligence leaks related to military actions against Iran.

Despite the criticism, CNN defended its reporting practices, stating that it aims to provide a balanced view by including opinions from various parties, including ICE. Their spokesperson highlighted that the report was based on a publicly available app, ensuring that users were informed about the ongoing immigration discourse nationwide.

Trump administration working to prosecute CNN for promoting ICE tracker, ‘false reports’ about Iran

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed on Tuesday that she is working with the Justice Department to see if the Trump administration can prosecute CNN for promoting an app that alerts users to nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in real time.

Noem’s announcement came after the White House expressed outrage on Monday that CNN covered the “ICEBlock” app during the network’s recent programming. Border czar Tom Homan called for the DOJ to investigate the matter.

ICEBlock currently has more than 20,000 users, including in Los Angeles, where controversial deportation efforts have taken place.

“We’re working with the Department of Justice to see if we can prosecute [CNN] for that, because what they’re doing is actively encouraging people to avoid law enforcement activities, operations, and we’re going to actually go after them and prosecute them with the partnership of [Attorney Geneneral Pam Bondi] if we can, because what they’re doing, we believe is illegal,” Noem told the press as Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) stood by her side during a Florida appearance.

Trump also offered comments, telling reporters he hoped the DOJ would prosecute CNN for covering a partial preliminary intelligence leak that suggested his recent strikes on Iran did less damage to the regime’s nuclear facilities than he claimed.

The three Iranian nuclear sites targeted by seven B-2 bombers that dropped 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs were “totally obliterated,” Trump said, adding that the pilots who conducted the mission “have to be celebrated.”

“And I’d come home and say, What do you mean? Do you mean? We didn’t hit the target … You know, the pilots came home, they said, we hit the target … So they may be very well prosecuted for that. What they did there, we think, is totally illegal,” the president added.

Noem’s promise to seek a lawsuit against CNN comes after the network featured an interview with the app’s creator, Joshua Aaron, who said he was inspired to create ICEBlock as a way to fight back against deportation efforts which he compared to Nazi Germany.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called CNN’s decision to report on the app “unacceptable,” claiming that such an action “is encouraging violence against law enforcement officers who are trying to keep our country safe.”

Although Leavitt conceded on Monday that she had not seen the segment in question, she alleged that it “sounds like this would be an incitement of further violence against our ICE officers.”

As he called for a DOJ investigation into the network, Homan claimed the same day that CNN was “trying to forecast law enforcement operations” by reporting on the app.

Meanwhile, ICE acting Director Todd Lyons claimed that “CNN is willfully endangering the lives of officers who put their lives on the line every day and enabling dangerous criminal aliens to evade U.S. law.”

“Is this simply reckless ‘journalism’ or overt activism?” he questioned.

CNN has pushed back against criticism, arguing that it is covering all sides of the matter, including comments from ICE, to offer viewers a comprehensive picture of the public’s opinion on immigration.

“CNN reported on a publicly available app, which is generating attention across the United States, and reached out to ICE for comment prior to publication. After CNN published its reporting, ICE posted a response, which is now included in the story,” a CNN spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
