Travis Kelce joins as producer for film funded by Biden’s green energy tax credits
NFL Star Travis Kelce Ventures into Hollywood as Producer for New Film
NFL star Travis Kelce is making his mark in Hollywood by signing on as a producer for the upcoming film, “My Dead Friend Zoe.” This project is particularly noteworthy as it is the first movie to take advantage of President Joe Biden’s renewable energy tax credits for financing, according to Variety.
The indie comedy, which cost less than $10 million to make, follows a female Afghanistan veteran who confronts her Vietnam veteran grandfather at their family lake house. The highly anticipated movie is set to premiere on March 9 at SXSW and features a star-studded cast including Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman.
The film’s financing was made possible through the sale of surplus tax credits by green energy entrepreneur Mike Field, marking the first instance of the film industry utilizing Biden’s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act for film financing. Field is also listed as a producer of this dark comedy.
“Hollywood is risky, right? On a scale of one to 10, Hollywood is a 9.5, especially for independent films,” said Ray Maiello, one of the movie’s producers. “However, these federal tax credits significantly reduce the risk to about a five.”
Maiello further explained, “[Field] and I have been discussing expanding for years, and then Biden really incentivized it. He recognized that people cannot accurately plan their tax liabilities and are hesitant to take risks. So, he opened up opportunities with these federal tax credits, and we are combining that with Hollywood. That’s the concept.”

Despite his recent Super Bowl victory with the Kansas City Chiefs, Kelce is not limiting himself to football. He follows in the footsteps of other professional football players like Tom Brady, who played himself in the comedy “80 for Brady” and served as a producer for the film. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the Paramount Pictures movie grossed $40 million worldwide against a $28 million budget.
