Trans-identifying male speaks on ‘women’s empowerment’ at NJ prison: Report.

A Trans-Identifying Male Empowers Women at New Jersey Prison

A trans-identifying male recently delivered a powerful talk on “women’s empowerment” at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey. La’Nae Grant, a biological man who identifies as a woman, spoke to female inmates on June 20, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and women’s rights, as reported by Reduxx.

“Transgender women are women,” Grant urged the audience, acknowledging that some cisgender women may initially struggle to accept trans-identifying men due to perceived competition for male partners.

Kokila Hiatt, an inmate at the facility, shared her experience with Reduxx, revealing that many attendees were unaware that the event would focus on gender identity.

“Most women politely sat and listened, while others tuned out. No one anticipated the true nature of this event. It was advertised as a Women’s Empowerment Event, and since Grant visibly ‘passes’ as a woman, no one suspected anything when they signed up,” Hiatt explained.

Hiatt emphasized that attendance was not mandatory, but attendees were deceived about the true purpose of the event, which she described as “government-funded and facilitated.” The talk took place in the prison gym, requiring approval from New Jersey’s Department of Corrections executive staff in Trenton.

“Custody staff members and administrative staff from the facility were present to supervise and enable inmate movement,” Hiatt revealed.

Grant, currently the CEO of Lady L’s LGBTQIA+ Services, has a background in public service, having previously worked for the city of East Orange. He was appointed to the Board of Trustees at the women’s prison by Governor Phil Murphy, who praised Grant as a longtime activist for transgender rights.

In an interview with New Jersey Advance Media, Grant shared his personal journey, stating that he began transitioning into a woman around the age of 28. He underwent hormone therapy, genital surgery, and breast reconstructive surgery. Prior to his transition, he identified as a gay man.

In 2021, New Jersey prison officials made the decision to place trans-identifying males in the women’s prison. However, this policy was later adjusted to prioritize safety and other factors after a male inmate at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility impregnated two female inmates.

Grant’s talk at the prison serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the transgender community and the importance of promoting inclusivity and understanding.
