Top four takeaways from JD Vance’s guest hosting of The Charlie Kirk Show

Vice President JD Vance paid tribute to close friend Charlie Kirk, the late co-founder of Turning Point USA, during a special two-hour guest-hosting stint on The Charlie Kirk Show.

“I am moonlighting as a radio host today, of course, in honor of my dear friend Charlie,” said Vance, who filmed the show from the White House complex on Monday. Kirk was among the top conservatives who pushed for Vance to join President Donald Trump’s campaign as his running mate during the 2024 election cycle.

Vance described Kirk as “a joyful warrior for our country” and a “luminary” before hosting interviews with special guests.

The show featured cameos from several top administration officials, including White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson also joined the show, where every guest touted Kirk’s Christianity, commitment to his family, and the work of the movement he started targeting young conservatives to turn out for Trump.

Here are the top takeaways from Monday’s show.

1. Vance mourns Kirk’s death and slams Left for celebrating

The vice president, who said it was an “honor” to fly to Utah last week to retrieve Kirk’s body, stated he would honor the 31-year-old conservative activist’s life by becoming a better father and husband.

“Maybe the best way that I can contribute and the best way that I could honor my dear friend is to be the best husband that I can be, to be the kind of husband to my wife that he was to his,” Vance said after consoling Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, as they returned on Air Force Two last week.

Kirk died after being shot from 200 yards away, allegedly by Tyler Robinson, during an event at Utah Valley University.

Vance saved his harshest comments to excoriate members of the Left who celebrated Kirk’s death on social media.

“I really do believe that we can come together in this country,” Vance said. “I believe we must, but unity, real unity, can be found only after climbing the mountain of truth. And there are difficult truths we must confront in our country.

“But the data is clear, people on the Left are much likelier to defend and celebrate political violence. This is not a both-sides problem. If both sides have a problem, one side has a much bigger and malignant problem, and that is the truth we must be told.”

Authorities have not said Robinson was acting in conjunction with a group of left-leaning supporters. Still, the Trump White House immediately began blaming the Left for contributing to an environment that led to Robinson’s alleged killing of Kirk. Many Democrats have posted condolences to Erika Kirk and her young children but also pushed back and accused the GOP of also contributing to an environment where political violence has erupted.

“We can thank God that most Democrats don’t share these attitudes, and I do, while acknowledging that something has gone very wrong with a lunatic fringe, a minority, but a growing and powerful minority on the far Left,” Vance said.

2. White House team comes out in full force for Kirk

A livestream of Vance hosting the radio program was broadcast in the White House press briefing room, and featured appearances not just from Wiles, Leavitt, and Kennedy, but also deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff for communications and personnel Taylor Budowich, deputy communications director Kaelan Dorr, and Andrew Kalvnet, Kirk’s longtime friend and the show’s executive producer.

Leavitt spoke of her involvement with Turning Point USA as a Generation Z conservative leader and praised Kirk for his work boosting the Trump campaign.

“The president has said it himself, the president’s massive gains with young Americans across the country was in no small part because of the efforts of Charlie Kirk in Turning Point USA,” Leavitt said. “And our team on the campaign was constantly checking in with him and keeping him apprised of what the president was doing and saying, because we needed his voice to relay that to his audience, which is made up of young people across the country.”

Kirk was influential in the future HHS secretary’s involvement with the Trump administration after dropping his presidential campaign.

“Charlie was probably the primary architect of my unification with President Trump,” Kennedy said. “I actually announced my endorsement of President Trump at a Turning Point Rally in Arizona, which was his idea.”

Even as Trump and Kennedy shook hands onstage, the fireworks and sparklers were “all Charlie’s orchestration,” the secretary said.

Wiles told Vance that Kirk was helpful to the campaign by handling much of the door-to-door canvassing and turnout efforts.

“At the end of this whole odyssey, the person that really did everything they said they were going to do, and more, was Turning Point,” Wiles said. “He had an army of good people who were motivated and passionate, and they delivered 110% and I don’t know that Charlie gets enough credit for that.”

3. Miller previews how White House will take on the Left

Trump has repeatedly signaled that he will target and investigate left-wing violence in the aftermath of Kirk’s murder, which Miller appeared to preview on the show with Vance.

“We are going to channel all of the anger that we have over the organized campaign that led to this assassination to uproot and dismantle these terrorist networks,” Miller began. “So let me explain a bit what that means: the organized doxing campaigns, the organized riots, the organized street violence, the organized campaigns of dehumanization, vilification, posting people’s addresses, combining that with messaging that’s designed to trigger, incite violence, and the actual organized cells that carry out and facilitate the violence. It is a vast domestic terror movement.

“With God as my witness, we are going to use every resource we have at the Department of Justice, Homeland Security, and throughout this government to identify, disrupt, dismantle, and destroy these networks and make America safe again for the American people.”

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson did not give specific actions that Trump will take when contacted by the Washington Examiner, but she said perpetrators will be prosecuted.

“The President was clear: the perpetrator of this horrific act will pay for what they did. They will face the full wrath of the American justice system,” Jackson said in a statement. “And any other left-wing whack jobs who engage in targeted political violence like the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

4. Carlson denounces the appropriation of Kirk’s murder for political gain

The former Fox News host praised Kirk’s embrace of faith, integrity, and commitment to engage with those who disagreed with his political views before admonishing people for cynically benefiting from Kirk’s death.

“I think now is exactly the wrong time to appropriate the memory of someone and the emotion that comes with that, the really intense emotion that all of us feel and his murder, and use it for your own parochial ends,” Carlson said. “Like, ‘He stood for this,’ you know.

“And I think the reason that Charlie was able to bridge the gap, particularly in foreign policy, is because he had, for example, genuine affection for Israel.”

Carlson also slammed those who tried to use Kirk’s views for their own movements.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS, LAWMAKERS, AND PERSONAL FRIENDS PAY TRIBUTE TO CHARLIE KIRK AT KENNEDY CENTER VIGIL

“I don’t think it’s helpful for people to jump in, particularly foreign heads of state, to say, this is what, you know, he lived for my cause, or whatever,” he said. “That’s disgusting. Actually, don’t do that. That turns everybody off. You don’t help your own cause by doing that. And it’s also literally untrue.

“So I just hope that we can continue in — I’m not exaggerating — the spirit that he operated in, which is one of love for other people, including people we disagree with.”
