Prominent Black Academic Exposes Democrat ‘Lies’ on Florida’s African American History Curriculum
Academic Slams Kamala Harris for ”Lies” About Florida’s African American History Curriculum
One of the academics behind Florida’s African American history curriculum has strongly criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for spreading false information about the material. He called her remarks “categorically false.”
Harris sparked a false narrative when she visited Jacksonville, Florida, and falsely claimed that “middle school students will be taught that enslaved people benefited from slavery.”
Harris focused on a single sentence from the 216-page curriculum that explained how freed slaves used the skills they acquired during slavery to improve their lives: “Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”
The College Board’s AP African American Studies course framework for 2023-2024 also includes a similar item. It states that enslaved people learned specialized trades and used those skills to provide for themselves and others after gaining freedom.
The College Board’s AP classes are widely available in schools across the U.S.
Dr. William Allen, a member of Florida’s African American History Standards Workgroup and former chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, criticized Harris and others for spreading “lies.”
Fox News host Jesse Watters pointed out that ABC News only aired an edited clip of Allen’s remarks about the curriculum, further perpetuating the false narrative.

Allen clarified his position, stating:
“The only criticism I’ve encountered so far is a single one that was articulated by the Vice President, and which was an error. As I stated in my response to the Vice President, it was categorically false. It was never said that slavery was beneficial to Africans. What was said, and anyone who reads this will see this with clarity: It is the case that Africans proved resourceful, resilient and adaptive. And were able to develop skills and aptitudes which serve to their benefit, both while enslaved and after enslavement.“
During an interview with Watters, Allen emphasized the importance of truth and accused Harris of spreading lies. He also suggested that those on the Left pushing false claims have their own agenda and want to control the narrative of slavery.

Allen highlighted the story of Frederick Douglass, who learned to read despite the obstacles imposed by his slave owner. He used his knowledge to benefit himself and his country. Allen emphasized that the curriculum aims to tell the stories of those who lived through slavery and should not be interpreted or distorted by others.
In an interview with Megyn Kelly, Allen revealed that the group responsible for creating the curriculum conducted their deliberations publicly and invited input from various stakeholders, including teachers unions. However, the unions remained silent throughout the process and only criticized the curriculum after it was completed.
Absolutely brutal look for the FL teachers union here, though VERY on-brand. The partisan bosses don’t care about educating kids at all. They care about politics and self-interest. Bruising: pic.twitter.com/5gm6JPvhPI
