Tom Homan says Newsom and Bass will be prosecuted if they choose to ‘cross the line’ – Washington Examiner
Tom Homan, the border czar, emphasized that no one is above the law regarding immigration enforcement, responding to a recent exchange wiht California Governor Gavin Newsom. Homan clarified that he did not threaten Newsom with arrest but indicated that if the governor were to obstruct immigration efforts, he could face prosecution. This statement arose amid tensions surrounding the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles during recent riots, where Homan criticized local officials for their inaction. Newsom has publicly challenged Homan, inviting him to arrest him following this warning. Homan reiterated his stance, asserting that even high-ranking officials like Newsom must adhere to the law, just as anyone else would. He also pointed out that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will increase its presence in sanctuary cities as part of ongoing enforcement efforts. Additionally, Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the federal government has the jurisdiction to prosecute individuals involved in the riots, reinforcing the message that violations against federal officers will have serious consequences.
Tom Homan says Newsom and Bass will be prosecuted if they choose to ‘cross the line’
Border czar Tom Homan denied threatening to arrest Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) amid the Los Angeles riots, but stressed that “no one’s above the law” in preventing the deportation of illegal immigrants.
Newsom and President Donald Trump have been feuding online over the decision to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles, where Homan said things were “out of control” and the governor and Mayor Karen Bass did “nothing.” Newsom has since encouraged Homan to arrest him after the border czar warned that obstructing immigration enforcement would lead to an arrest of “anybody,” after which Trump revealed he would arrest the governor if he were Homan.
Following up on Newsom’s taunt, Homan said that protesters have “the right to protest,” but cannot impede law enforcement efforts and harbor illegal immigrants from deportation.
“And the question was, ‘Well, how about Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom, what if they cross the line?’ I said they’ll be prosecuted, too,” Homan said on Fox News’s Jesse Watters Primetime. “Haven’t they said for the last four years no one’s above the law? They cross the line, we’ll seek prosecution. You and I would be held accountable. They prosecuted President Trump. No one’s above the law, that’s what they said, even Governor Newsom. If he crosses that line, we’ll ask the attorney general to seek prosecution. It wasn’t a threat. Nobody threatened to arrest him, but if he crosses that line and commits a crime, he’s no better than anybody else. We’ll seek prosecution.”
Homan also detailed how Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s presence in Los Angeles reflects how the agency will continue to “flood the zone” in sanctuary cities. He added that ICE’s work is why Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” must be signed by the president so that border patrol can be properly funded.
In a separate television appearance on Monday, Homan reiterated that his comments on Newsom were “blown so far out of proportion” and that he would only be arrested if he committed a crime. Despite this, he said, “I stand by what I said,” and that not even the governor of California is “above the law.”
MOSTLY PEACEFUL RIOTS RETURN AS MEDIA DOWNPLAY CHAOS AGAIN
On Monday, Attorney General Pam Bondi said that the federal government has jurisdiction over California to prosecute anyone involved in the Los Angeles riots. She also said that anyone who chooses to “spit on a federal law enforcement officer” will be charged with a federal crime and will receive up to five years in prison.
Bondi also said that the FBI has identified a suspect spotted throwing cinderblocks at ICE vehicles, and that he would be placed “on the ‘Most Wanted’ list.”
