Tom Cotton supports Biden’s decision to provide cluster munitions to Ukraine.
President Biden Receives Approval for Sending Cluster Munitions to Ukraine
President Joe Biden has earned the approval of Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) for his decision to cluster munitions.”>send cluster munitions to Ukraine. As an Army veteran, Cotton issued a statement in response to the White House’s announcement on Friday, expressing support for providing Ukraine with these weapons in light of Russia’s use of the same against them.
“For Ukrainian forces to defeat Putin’s invasion, Ukraine needs at least equal access to the weapons Russia already uses against them, like cluster munitions,” Cotton wrote. “Providing this new capability is the right decision—even if it took too long—and is one I’ve long supported.”
Cotton has been vocal about his stance on supporting Ukraine, previously urging Biden to “send everything that shoots” to their friends in Ukraine. He criticized the administration for not taking action sooner, which he believes has prolonged the war and caused unnecessary bloodshed.
Before Russia invaded Ukraine, Cotton warned of the imminent threat, attributing it to President Biden’s perceived weakness. He argued that Biden’s lack of decisive action has led Vladimir Putin to believe there will be no consequences for Russia’s aggression.
Cluster munitions are highly destructive, capable of inflicting damage equivalent to four football fields when deployed. Due to their devastating impact, over 100 countries have banned the use of these weapons.
However, not everyone agrees with Biden and Cotton’s decision. Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Sara Jacobs (D-CA) have introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that effectively prohibits the transfer of cluster munitions.
