Coroner: Toddler dies in hot car outside SC high school.
Tragic Incident: Toddler Dies in Hot Car
CHARLESTON, S.C.—A heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Friday when a toddler tragically lost her life inside a scorching hot car. The child’s mother, who works at Bishop England High School in Charleston, accidentally left her daughter in the vehicle parked outside the school. The devastating news was confirmed by Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell.
Hartwell expressed his belief that the 16-month-old girl’s death was caused by the intense heat, although an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause. The temperature inside the car is estimated to have exceeded 100 degrees F (about 38 degrees C).
It was a passerby who made the heartbreaking discovery approximately eight hours later and immediately called 911. The child was found still strapped in her car seat.
According to Hartwell, the child’s chances of survival inside the sweltering car were minimal, possibly only lasting a few minutes.
“I definitely feel confident that it was triple digits within that car at peak time of today,” he stated.
Community Mourns and Offers Support
The tragic incident has deeply affected the Bishop England High School community. In response, the school canceled its Friday night football game and classes on Monday. President Patrick Finneran sent an email to families, urging them to keep the grieving family and the school community in their prayers during this unimaginably difficult time.
Police investigators will be conducting interviews and presenting their findings to the county solicitor’s office, as stated by Hartwell.
