Tim Walz and Jacob Frey under criminal investigation by DOJ

The Department of Justice subpoenaed Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey as part of a criminal investigation.

The two Minnesota officials are being accused of impeding federal law enforcement’s ability to do its job in the state, sources told several outlets, likely referring to the duo’s hostility toward Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Walz and Frey effectively confirmed the development on X by decrying their targeting.

“Two days ago, it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week, it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic,” Walz said in a post on X. “The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.”

“This is an obvious attempt to intimidate me for standing up for Minneapolis, local law enforcement, and residents against the chaos and danger this Administration has brought to our city,” Frey said in his own post. “I will not be intimidated. My focus remains where it’s always been: keeping our city safe.”

“America depends on leaders that use integrity and the rule of law as the guideposts for governance. Neither our city nor our country will succumb to this fear. We stand rock solid,” he added.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Department of Justice for comment.

Sources familiar with the matter told the Washington Post that the two are being investigated under a federal statute on conspiracy to impede a federal investigation, the same charge leveled against protesters who have tried to impede ICE operations.

Walz and Frey have waged a rhetorical war against the federal government over a recent surge of ICE and other federal law enforcement personnel to Minnesota, a situation that became amplified after an ICE officer shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman.

Minnesota’s attorney general filed his own lawsuit against the federal government earlier this week, alleging an unconstitutional “federal invasion.”
