Tim Scott Doubles Down On Claims About Florida Curriculum: DeSantis And Harris ‘Both Signed Off’ On It

Sen. Tim Scott Doubles Down on Attacks Against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

In the lead-up to the Republican Party’s first ‌presidential primary debate, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) has intensified his criticism⁤ of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Scott argues that DeSantis shares the same⁣ views as Vice President ⁢Kamala ⁣Harris regarding the black history curriculum taught in Florida.

Earlier this year, Harris made a last-minute trip to Florida ‍and seized on a single‍ sentence from the 216-page⁣ curriculum. The sentence clarified‌ that enslaved individuals developed‍ skills during slavery that they later used for their personal benefit. Harris used this line to claim that Florida ⁢middle school students would be taught that enslaved people benefited from slavery.

In an interview with Fox News, Scott emphasized that⁣ both DeSantis and ‌Harris had approved the same curriculum. He suggested removing the controversial sentence, stating that defending any aspect⁢ of an industry ⁣that deprived African⁢ Americans of their freedom is‍ morally wrong.

Scott continued, passionately expressing his belief that there were no redeeming qualities ‌in slavery. He argued that discussing slavery in any positive light⁣ in⁤ 2023 is a step in ⁢the wrong direction for the nation.‌ Slavery, he ⁢asserted, was an immoral and unethical industry that devastated black families, mutilated black individuals, and subjected black women⁤ to rape.

Similarities‌ in the College Board’s Course Framework

The ⁢College Board’s course framework for AP African American Studies ⁢for 2023-2024 includes a similar item. The ‌curriculum acknowledges that enslaved individuals learned ⁢specialized trades and worked in various professions, such as painters, carpenters, tailors, musicians, and healers. Once freed, African Americans ⁣utilized ⁢these skills to support⁢ themselves⁣ and others.

Harris’ remarks faced ⁣criticism⁢ from ⁤a prominent black academic who played a role in developing the curriculum.

However, some Republicans,⁤ including Scott and several black U.S. ‍lawmakers who have ‍endorsed former President ⁢Donald Trump, echoed ‍Harris’ statements last month to criticize DeSantis.

Scott emphasized the devastating nature of slavery, highlighting its impact on families and the physical and emotional harm inflicted on individuals. He called on all individuals, especially those running for president, to acknowledge the true nature of slavery.

In response, DeSantis defended his state, accusing D.C. Republicans of ⁢accepting false narratives and lies perpetuated by the Left. He emphasized the importance of fighting back against falsehoods and speaking the truth.
