Tim Scott gains ground on DeSantis in latest Iowa poll.
Sen. Tim Scott Surges to Third Place in Iowa Poll
Exciting news for Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) as he climbs to third place in the latest Iowa poll, just five months before the 2024 Republican primary election’s opening caucuses. This surge in support comes as a result of Scott gaining an impressive 10 percentage points since the last survey conducted by Republican polling firm J.L. Partners in April.
Although former President Donald Trump still dominates the primary race with 43% support, experiencing a 2-point increase since April, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has seen a 9-point decrease, now holding 17% support, according to the poll released on Thursday. Biotechnology entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy follows with 5% support, while former Vice President Mike Pence, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie each have 3% support. Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) rounds out the list with 2% support.
DeSantis Performs Well Against Trump, Scott Gains Momentum
Despite Scott’s impressive momentum, DeSantis performs better when pitted against Trump. In a head-to-head matchup, Trump maintains 48% support compared to DeSantis’s 35%, with 17% remaining undecided. On the other hand, Trump leads with 54% support against Scott’s 34%, leaving 12% undecided.
The poll, conducted from Aug. 1 to 7 among 600 likely Republican caucusgoers, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points. It is worth noting that Trump was arraigned for the third time on Aug. 3, appearing in a federal court in Washington to plead not guilty to charges brought against him by special counsel Jack Smith regarding his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
According to RealClearPolitics, Trump maintains an average of 44% support in Iowa, followed by DeSantis with 17%, Scott with 10%, Ramaswamy with 5%, Haley with 4%, Pence and Christie with 3%, and Burgum with 2%.
While Iowa has not always been determinative in primary contests, it remains a crucial battleground. As the state hosts its annual fair, most of the field will descend on Des Moines this weekend and next week, making it an exciting time for the candidates and their supporters.
