Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN), one of the eight Republicans who voted to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), claimed that McCarthy elbowed him in the kidney. Burchett stated that he hadn’t spoken to McCarthy since the vote, but the incident occurred while he was talking to a reporter in the Capitol basement.
McCarthy, however, denied Burchett’s claims, explaining that he accidentally bumped into him while walking and talking with another representative and his security detail. McCarthy only realized something was wrong when Burchett started yelling at him.
The incident was captured on X, the popular social media platform, by an NPR reporter who witnessed the event.
Burchett confirmed the accuracy of the social media thread, recounting his exchange with McCarthy:
“Sorry Kevin didn’t mean to elbow —” Burchett responded jokingly as McCarthy kept walking, then seriously yelled, “Why’d you elbow me in the back Kevin?! Hey Kevin, you got any guts!?”
According to the reporter, Burchett also called McCarthy “pathetic” during the heated exchange.
After the incident, Burchett expressed his frustration with McCarthy, calling him a bully with a large fortune and a security detail. Burchett, hailing from East Tennessee, challenged McCarthy to settle their differences outside in the parking lot.
While the incident was documented, some speculate whether McCarthy intentionally elbowed Burchett or if it was an accidental collision due to the crowded area.
Another incident occurred during a House Oversight Committee hearing, where tensions flared between Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) and Chairman James Comer (R-KY). Comer snapped and yelled at Moskowitz, comparing him to a smurf.
Tensions also spilled over into the Senate, as Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) appeared ready to engage in a physical altercation with Teamsters President Sean O’Brien. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) had to step in to defuse the situation.
If the House can successfully pass the continuing resolution on Tuesday, they will be able to take a much-needed break for Thanksgiving. Speaker Johnson expressed the importance of this break, allowing everyone to cool off and reset before reconvening.
