Tim Ballard steps down amid sexual harassment claims at anti-trafficking group.
Anti-child trafficking activist Tim Ballard resigns amid sexual harassment allegations
Tim Ballard, the founder of Operation Underground Railroad and a prominent anti-child trafficking activist, has resigned from the organization following accusations of sexual harassment. The former Department of Homeland Security agent left the organization in June under mysterious circumstances, but a recent report reveals that his resignation came after a sexual misconduct investigation was launched against him. The investigation involved at least seven women.
According to the report, Ballard is accused of inviting female staff and volunteers from Operation Underground Railroad to accompany him on missions overseas, posing as his wife. He would then coerce them into sharing a bed with him or showering together, claiming it was necessary to deceive traffickers. Shockingly, one woman received explicit photographs of Ballard in only his underwear with fake tattoos, while another was asked how far she was willing to go to save children.
Organization responds to allegations
“OUR is dedicated to combatting sexual abuse, and does not tolerate sexual harassment or discrimination by anyone in its organization,” a statement from the organization read. “[We] retained an independent law firm to conduct a comprehensive investigation of all relevant allegations, and OUR continues to assess and improve the governance of the organization and protocols for its operations. To preserve the integrity of its investigation and to protect the privacy of all persons involved, OUR will not make any further public comment at this time.”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which Ballard is a former member, also condemned his actions, accusing him of using the church for personal or financial gain. Ballard, however, responded through the Spear Fund, an anti-trafficking organization where he serves as a senior adviser, reaffirming his commitment to the church.
“It has been alleged that an LDS church spokesperson issued a statement about me through a tabloid that is often hostile to people of faith,” the statement read. “My church has not publicly verified the statement’s authenticity. We are also highly suspicious about the timing of such a statement given its close proximity to Mitt Romney’s announcement that he is retiring, my own public comments about my prayers about future plans, and the fact that the LDS church does not engage in political activity. In any event, nothing will change my core beliefs. If someone within the church did release this statement, I am absolutely confident that the right people will step in and ensure that proper due process is followed as the rules of our church dictate.”
Ballard’s story of rescuing children from sex slavery was recently depicted in the film Sound of Freedom, which gained significant attention and even received praise from former President Donald Trump. There are also rumors circulating that Ballard may run for the Senate in Utah following Senator Mitt Romney’s announcement of retirement.

How will the third-party law firm conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations against Tim Ballard?
Third-party law firm to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations against Tim Ballard. As soon as we became aware of the misconduct, we took immediate action and Tim Ballard resigned from his position.”
Operation Underground Railroad (OUR) is a non-profit organization that works to rescue children from sex trafficking rings and provide aftercare and support for the survivors. It was founded by Tim Ballard in 2013 and has gained significant attention and support worldwide for its efforts. The organization operates internationally, working with law enforcement agencies and governments to rescue and rehabilitate victims of child trafficking.
The allegations against Tim Ballard have shocked and disappointed many in the anti-child trafficking community. His work with OUR had earned him praise and recognition, and he was seen as a leader in the fight against this heinous crime. However, these revelations show a disturbing abuse of power and a betrayal of trust.
Sexual harassment in any setting is unacceptable, but it is particularly alarming when it occurs within an organization that is dedicated to protecting vulnerable individuals. The allegations against Ballard highlight the urgent need for transparency and accountability within anti-trafficking organizations. It is essential that those who are responsible for rescuing victims and dismantling trafficking networks are held to the highest standards of integrity and ethics.
The resignation of Tim Ballard should not overshadow the important work that Operation Underground Railroad continues to do. The organization has assured the public that it remains committed to its mission and has taken steps to address the allegations and reinforce its policies against harassment and discrimination.
However, this incident also serves as a reminder that even those fighting against child trafficking are not immune to unethical behavior. It emphasizes the need for ongoing education, training, and monitoring within anti-trafficking organizations to prevent any form of abuse or misconduct.
It is crucial that survivors of trafficking, as well as those who work tirelessly to rescue and support them, can trust that the leaders of these organizations are acting with the utmost integrity. Any individual found guilty of sexual harassment or misconduct should not be allowed to continue in a position of power or influence within these organizations.
The allegations against Tim Ballard are a painful wake-up call for the anti-child trafficking community. It is a reminder that even those who appear to be champions in the fight against trafficking can betray the principles they claim to uphold. Moving forward, it is imperative that anti-trafficking organizations place a strong emphasis on ethical behavior, transparency, and accountability to ensure the safety and well-being of those they serve.
