Three Washington School Board Members Removed for Defying Mask Mandate.
Three School District Members Ousted for Defying Mask Mandate
In a dramatic turn of events, three members of a school district in Washington state were recently removed from their positions on the school board. The ousted members, Semi Bird, Kari Williams, and Audra Byrd, faced a recall election after they defied a statewide COVID mask mandate last year.
The recall effort gained momentum after the school board voted in February 2022 to make face masks optional for students in the Richland district, going against the mask mandate imposed by Democratic Governor Jay Inslee. This decision sparked accusations that the board members violated the state’s indoor mask mandate, Washington’s Open Public Meetings Act, and the school district’s policies.
With 54% of the vote against them, Bird, Williams, and Byrd were officially recalled from their positions on the Richland School District board in southern Washington. Williams and Byrd attended their final board meeting, where emotions ran high. Byrd expressed her gratitude for the election process and the power of the people to stand up for their beliefs.
“I am a firm believer in the power of the election process and in the voice of the people. Although I will admit I was a little heartbroken for the election results, I love that we have a country where people have the power to vote and stand up for what they believe in,” she said.
Williams, whose seat is up for re-election this year, remains hopeful about returning in November. Meanwhile, Bird, a Republican candidate for governor in Washington in 2024, emphasized that the recall was about more than just a mask mandate. He believes it was a reaction to the change and accountability they brought to the district, which some progressives did not appreciate.
“It was a combination of change and accountability that we brought forward that the progressives within our district did not like,” Bird explained. “With the support of the teachers union and other progressive advocacy groups, they brought tens of thousands of dollars to a school board recall during an off-year primary where we had our supporters come out in numbers and support us, but the masses of conservatives who are our voter base did not turn out.”
Bird, a former U.S. Marine Corps member and the first black candidate elected to the Richland school district’s board, remains committed to fighting for what he believes in. He hopes to restore human decency and protect the well-being of children.
This recall election is just one example of the growing tension between parents and schools during the pandemic. Frustrated parents across the country have taken matters into their own hands by running for school boards. In fact, conservatives have successfully flipped at least nine school boards in six states, giving them conservative majorities.
As the debate over pandemic restrictions, learning loss, and other issues continues, it remains to be seen how these changes in school board composition will shape the future of education.
