Three people were killed by a gunman who opened fire at bystanders in a Target parking lot Monday in Austin, Texas, police said.
At a news conference, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the gunman, 32, drove away in a stolen car after the shooting, crashed the car, stole another, then was captured by police after being tased. Several others were wounded, including children. Officials told KVUE that children were not among the dead, though Davis said she couldn’t give further information about the victims.
“This is a very sad day for Austin. It’s a very sad day for us all, and my condolences go out to the families,” Davis said.

Davis said the gunman had a history of mental health problems.
In a social media post, Austin Mayor Kirk Wilson said,” This is a devastating situation, and my heart is with the victims and their families. While this remains an active and ongoing investigation, what I’ll say is that this was a sickening, cowardly act of gun violence. I am grateful for the quick response of our APD officers and other first responders and want to thank them for their actions to apprehend the suspect.”
