Years ago, a life-saving pregnancy center continues to support me and my sons
As a mother, there’s nothing quite as heartwarming as witnessing your child’s excitement while opening their first Christmas present, especially when just days before you were unsure if you could afford one.
I owe it all to my local pregnancy resource center.
I shouldn’t have been surprised; the Boston Center for Pregnancy Choices in Massachusetts had been by my side for years, starting with my pregnancy three years ago. At 20 years old, homeless and jobless, I feared I wouldn’t be able to provide for my unborn child and believed abortion was my only option.
My cousin, who worked at the Boston Center for Pregnancy Choices, encouraged me to apply for their pregnancy program. Knowing how much I wanted to keep my son, he assured me that they would provide the support and resources I needed to get back on my feet.
Despite my initial doubts, I decided to submit an application. Soon after, I received a life-changing phone call welcoming me to the center. It transformed not only my life but also the lives of my two sons.
What struck me the most was the absence of judgment from the center’s staff, despite my young age. They empowered me within my circumstances and showed me a level of love and kindness I had never experienced before. Instead of pressuring me into a decision, they discussed all my options and pledged their unwavering support, regardless of what I chose.
Regrets About my Abortion
This experience rescued me from a dark place I had been trapped in. Four years earlier, at just 16 years old, I discovered I was pregnant for the first time and sought guidance from Planned Parenthood. Despite my strong desire to become a mother and keep my child, the workers immediately pushed me towards getting an abortion.
“Is that really my only option?” I wondered at the time.
Looking back, if someone had shown me an alternative path, I would never have gone through with it. It’s a decision I regret to this day.
The weight of losing my child plunged me into a pit of depression and despair. However, the contrasting experience at the Boston Center for Pregnancy Choices rejuvenated me and instilled confidence, happiness, and a belief that I could overcome any challenge.
With their support, I embraced my role as a mother, and the center’s staff became my family. They saved my life and my son’s life, providing me with valuable courses and resources on parenting, car safety, breastfeeding, nutrition, and even a “father and me” class that my son’s father attended.
Then, two years later, I unexpectedly found myself pregnant again while still working towards stability. On the day I received the news, Rebecca from the center coincidentally reached out to check on me.
This time, I knew exactly where to turn. Abortion never crossed my mind, despite my initial feelings of embarrassment and shame.
The center understood my financial struggles and the challenge of providing for my 2-year-old son while pregnant. They pooled their resources to cover my rent and utilities, while also helping me find employment that could support my family.
Now, with the goal of obtaining my nursing degree, I work at a mental health company where I provide counseling to individuals with special needs.
Two Years Later, Center Staff Still Show They Care for Us
However, the most touching support I received from the Boston Center for Pregnancy Choices was when they called to ask what my two sons would like for Christmas, knowing that I couldn’t afford gifts on my own. Their gesture moved me to tears, and I requested a book, hoping to foster a love for reading in my children.
That book is still cherished and read to them today.
I will never forget what those women did for me and how they continue to be a presence in my life, even over a year after my second son’s birth. It breaks my heart to know that some individuals in the state have called for the closure of centers like the Boston Center for Pregnancy Choices. As a strong advocate for women, this deeply saddens me.
If it weren’t for the women at the center, I know my two sons wouldn’t be here today. I wouldn’t have healed from my abortion at 16 years old. I might not even be here at all.
Without pregnancy resource centers, women would be left with no options but abortion. Take it from someone who has been there.
This Christmas, my two sons and I are incredibly blessed. As we snuggle up together to read the book gifted to us by the Boston Center for Pregnancy Choices, with their wrapped presents under the tree, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the women who showed me my true potential. They empowered me to become the mother I am today, with the two loves of my life in my arms.
