Texas Dems launch new bid to unseat Sen. Cruz in 2024.
Democrats Launch Campaign to Defeat Ted Cruz in 2024
Democrats in Texas are gearing up for a fierce battle to remove Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) from office next year. They have unveiled the Beat Cruz War Room, a dynamic opposition research and mobilization campaign aimed at defeating the two-term incumbent.
The Beat Cruz War Room will assemble a team of political strategists and researchers dedicated to compiling opposition research that will ensure Ted Cruz’s loss in 2024. The team will also track other candidates in the race and develop strategic bilingual messaging to reach all voters across the Lone Star State.
“From voting against healthcare for injured Texas veterans, to opposing infrastructure funds for our state, to fleeing to a Cancun beach resort during the deadly winter freeze that claimed the lives of hundreds of his constituents — Texans have had enough of Ted Cruz’s bulls***,”
Gilberto Hinojosa, chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, expressed the party’s frustration with Cruz’s actions. He stated, “We’re proud to launch the Beat Cruz War Room to keep constant tabs on Senator Cruz — on the airwaves, on social media, in public records, and on the campaign trail — so we can make sure Texas voters know the fraudulent clown they have ‘representing’ them in Washington.”
The Beat Cruz War Room is unique in that it is the only “zero-profit effort” to dismantle Cruz’s campaign. It operates under the state’s Democratic Party, allowing members to coordinate directly with the eventual Democratic nominee.
“No matter who our nominee ends up being, with the help of the Beat Cruz War Room, we’re going to send Ted Cruz packing — back to his preferred Cancun resort, his plush podcast studio, campaigning for other far-right extremists in random states, or wherever the hell else he currently goes from 9 to 5 when he’s supposed to be working for us,”
Hinojosa emphasized the determination to remove Cruz from office and fill the seat with a representative who will diligently serve the hardworking Texans. The Beat Cruz War Room joins other recent efforts, such as the Lose Cruz PAC, to oust Cruz from office and flip the Texas Senate seat blue for the first time since 1993.
Cruz’s reelection in 2018 was a narrow victory, defeating Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke by only 3 percentage points. Outside groups are now hoping to capitalize on recent controversies to boost his opponents. Several Democrats, including Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) and state Rep. Roland Gutierrez, are already eyeing the opportunity to challenge Cruz.
The race for Cruz’s seat is expected to be highly competitive in the 2024 cycle. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates it as “likely Republican,” making it one of only two seats currently held by a Republican in that category. However, Cruz is considered one of the more vulnerable incumbents due to a series of recent controversies during his term.
One notable incident was Cruz’s response to a mass shooting at a Texas shopping mall earlier this year. Instead of advocating for stricter gun control measures, Cruz extended prayers for the victims’ families and the community, drawing criticism from gun safety advocates.
Another scandal involved Cruz’s decision to vacation in Cancun while his state faced severe power outages caused by a winter storm. Despite these controversies, Cruz benefits from widespread name recognition and a strong Republican base in Texas.
Cruz’s race is one of eight Senate seats that Republicans must defend in 2024, compared to 23 for Democrats. This puts the GOP in a favorable position to seize control of the upper chamber. Currently, Democrats hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris serving as a tiebreaker vote if needed.
