Scouts flee world jamboree due to approaching storm.
Tens of thousands of young scouts evacuate World Scout Jamboree in South Korea as Tropical Storm Khanun approaches
Tens of thousands of young scouts from over 158 nations are currently in the process of evacuating the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea as Tropical Storm Khanun nears, according to authorities.
Starting Tuesday, approximately 36,000 scouts will be transported via roughly 1,000 vehicles from the South Korean county of Buan, where the jamboree is taking place, as confirmed by South Korea’s Minister of the Interior and Safety Kim Sung-ho.
Accommodations arranged in Seoul and its metropolitan area
Reports state that accommodations for the scouts will be provided in Seoul and its metropolitan area. Government training centers, education buildings, and hotels are currently being sought out to ensure the scouts’ safety and well-being, as mentioned by Kim.
The United States military base Camp Humphreys will also be accommodating scouts from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, in addition to American scouts.
The World Organization of the Scout Movement is committed to providing all necessary resources and support for the participants during their stay and until they safely return to their home countries. The evacuation process is estimated to take approximately six hours.
Tropical Storm Khanun, an unusual storm with heavy rain, power outages, and strong winds, has been causing havoc in the southwestern islands of Japan. It is expected to arrive in South Korea on Thursday, potentially affecting areas like Buan as early as Wednesday, with winds ranging from 73 to 95 miles per hour.
