Tennessee city pays ACLU $500,000 to resolve drag ban dispute

Murfreesboro, Tennessee ⁣Settles with ACLU⁣ Over Drag Performance Ban

Murfreesboro, Tennessee has reached ⁢a settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) regarding its previous ⁢ban on ⁢drag performances in public ⁤places. The‌ ban, ‌which is no longer in effect, has been deemed unconstitutional.

As part of the settlement, the city will be required to ‍pay ⁣$500,000 to both the ACLU and‌ the Tennessee Equality Project. Additionally, the ‍city must now accept permit applications for future drag performances.

The ban was ⁢implemented following a Pride event in 2022, which the ‌city claimed involved children in a ⁣sexual manner. However, the Tennessee Equality Project defended‌ the performers, stating that they were fully dressed.

ACLU⁢ Alleges Unconstitutional Prohibition

The ACLU accused Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland and City Manager ⁢Craig Tindall of unconstitutionally prohibiting permit requests ‍from the Tennessee Equality Project.

“This settlement sends a clear message that the city’s discrimination ⁣against the LGBTQ+ community was blatantly⁤ unconstitutional and will‍ not be tolerated,” ‍stated the ACLU‍ of Tennessee.

In⁤ October, a federal judge dismissed the ⁢ordinance against‌ drag⁣ performances, rendering it unenforceable. Earlier in the year, another federal judge‍ ruled that a Tennessee state law criminalizing drag shows in certain public locations was also unconstitutional.

Several other states, including⁢ Idaho, Kentucky, North Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma, ⁤and Utah, are currently considering similar⁢ restrictions on drag-related events. Texas has already passed a law prohibiting⁤ children from participating in sexual performances in both legislative ⁢chambers.
