Unjust Arrest
The girl’s mother, Nikita Snow, recounted the events leading up to her daughter’s arrest. After her sister expressed concerns about the girl’s behavior, the police were called to their home. However, upon arrival, the situation escalated when the teenager made a comment about one of the female officers.
“She said ‘I think she’s a lesbian like nanna Julie,'” Snow explained. “Suddenly, an officer launched herself at me and my daughter, dragging her away for a ‘homophobic public order offense.'”
Misunderstanding and Mistreatment
According to Snow, her daughter immediately apologized and tried to explain that her comment was not meant to be offensive. However, the female officer insisted on arresting the teenager, disregarding her autism and the fact that her grandmother is a lesbian.
Footage of the incident shows the girl being forcefully taken out of the house, despite Snow’s pleas for understanding due to her daughter’s scoliosis. The girl fell to the ground and grabbed her shoulder in pain as the police attempted to take her into custody.
The young girl was held in custody for 20 hours without being informed of the charges against her. Snow emphasized that her daughter was never read her rights, and the police officer did not have a warrant or permission to enter their home.
Police Response
The West Yorkshire Police responded to the incident, stating that the video shared on social media only provides a limited snapshot of the circumstances. They assured the public that they take the welfare of young people and neurodiversity seriously. The department also mentioned that the girl appeared to be intoxicated and was arrested on suspicion of a homophobic public order offense.
However, the video has sparked outrage and calls for a thorough investigation into the police’s handling of the situation. The incident highlights the need for better training and understanding when interacting with individuals with autism.
U.K. law defines a homophobic hate crime as any incident or crime perceived to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards a person’s sexual orientation or transgender identity. It is crucial to address such incidents with sensitivity and ensure the rights and well-being of all individuals are protected.
