(Reuters) – Versatile recording artist SZA stole the spotlight in this year’s Grammy Award nominations, earning a whopping nine nods. She outshined industry heavyweights Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Billie Eilish, making it a year dominated by women artists and the movie blockbuster “Barbie.”
The winners of the prestigious awards will be revealed at the ceremony on Feb. 4.
SZA Leads the Pack
The 34-year-old SZA, born Solána Imani Rowe, secured nominations for album of the year with “SOS” and record of the year and song of the year for “Kill Bill.” She also made the shortlist in multiple genres, including pop, melodic rap, and both progressive and traditional R&B.
The song “Kill Bill,” which is also nominated for best R&B performance, takes inspiration from Quentin Tarantino’s two-part film. Its lyrics revolve around killing an ex-boyfriend and his girlfriend, with the narrator expressing a preference for hell over loneliness.

Following closely behind SZA, Victoria Monét received seven nominations, including best new artist and record of the year for “On My Mama.” Phoebe Bridgers, in addition to her duo performance nomination with SZA for “Ghost in the Machine,” scored six other nominations as part of boygenius, a collaboration with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus.
Olivia Rodrigo also earned six nominations, with her hit “vampire” being nominated for record of the year, song of the year, and best pop solo performance. This puts her on par with country star Brandy Clark and industry stalwarts Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, and Taylor Swift.
While Taylor Swift may not have broken away from the pack in nominations this year, her six nods bring her total career nominations to 52, with 12 wins under her belt.
Embracing Girl Power
Reflecting the girl power theme of this year’s nominations, the motion picture “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig, secured four out of the five nominations for the best song written for visual media category. Among them is Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?,” which is also nominated for record of the year, song of the year, and best pop solo performance. Representing the male artists, actor Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” received a nomination in the visual media category. Jon Batiste leads the male singers with six nominations.
The Grammys this year cover recordings released between Oct. 1, 2022, and Sept. 15, 2023. The voters include recording artists, songwriters, composers, producers, mixers, and engineers. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 4.
Last year, pop icon Beyoncé made history by winning four Grammys, bringing her total career wins to 32. She is also tied with her husband, rapper Jay-Z, for the most career nominations with 88.
