Israel Carries Out Airstrikes on Areas Near Syrian City of Homs

Early Sunday, Israel launched airstrikes on areas near the Syrian city of Homs, causing material damage but fortunately no casualties, according to a statement from the Syrian military.

The Israeli military reported that a Syrian anti-aircraft missile exploded over Israeli territory, which prompted another round of strikes.

Syrian state media quoted an unnamed military official who claimed that the air defenses successfully shot down some of the missiles fired by Israeli warplanes flying over neighboring Lebanon.

Israeli authorities have not commented on the airstrike on Homs. However, the military confirmed that one of the Syrian air defense missiles exploded over Israeli territory without causing any damage. Israeli police reported that the remains of the rocket landed in the southern Israeli city of Rahat.

In response to the rocket, Israeli jets targeted the air defense battery from where the anti-aircraft rocket was launched. The military also struck other targets, although no further details were provided.

Israel, determined to prevent Iranian entrenchment next door, has conducted numerous strikes on targets in government-controlled parts of neighboring Syria in recent years. However, it rarely acknowledges these actions.

The most recent suspected Israeli airstrike on Syria occurred on June 14 near the capital Damascus, resulting in one soldier being wounded.

Over the past few years, Israel has also targeted the international airports in Damascus and the northern Syrian city of Aleppo multiple times, often rendering them temporarily out of commission.
