Suspect in Tupac Shakur’s shooting to appear in Las Vegas court.
Self-Proclaimed Gangster Arrested in Connection with Tupac Shakur’s Murder
In a dramatic turn of events, Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a self-described gangster believed to be the mastermind behind the 1996 shooting death of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas, is set to appear before a Nevada judge for the first time on Wednesday.
The arrest of Davis, 60, took place last Friday during an early-morning walk near his suburban Henderson home. Shortly after, a grand jury indictment was unsealed, charging him with murder in Clark County District Court.
But that’s not all. The grand jurors also voted to add sentencing enhancements for the use of a deadly weapon and alleged gang activity, potentially adding decades to Davis’ sentence if he is convicted.

Despite being held without bond, Davis declined an interview request from The Associated Press. No attorney has been listed in court records to provide comment on his behalf.
Interestingly, Davis had long been a suspect in the case and even publicly admitted his involvement in the killing prior to the release of his tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” in 2019.
In his memoir, Davis wrote, “There’s one thing that’s for sure when living that gangster lifestyle. You already know that the stuff you put out is going to come back; you never know how or when, but there’s never a doubt that it’s coming.”
It was Davis’ own statements that reignited the police investigation, leading to the recent indictment. In July, Las Vegas police raided his home, bringing renewed attention to one of hip-hop music’s most enduring mysteries.
Prosecutors allege that Shakur’s murder was a result of a rivalry and power struggle within the “gangsta rap” genre. East Coast members of a Bloods gang sect associated with rap music mogul Marion ”Suge” Knight clashed with West Coast members of a Crips sect led by Davis in Compton, California.
The tension reached its peak on the night of September 7, 1996, when a brawl erupted between Shakur and Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at the MGM Grand hotel-casino after a Mike Tyson boxing match.
Following the casino brawl, Knight drove a BMW with Shakur in the front passenger seat. While waiting at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip, a white Cadillac pulled up on the passenger side, and gunfire erupted.
Shakur, who was shot multiple times, tragically passed away a week later at the age of 25. Knight sustained a minor injury from a bullet fragment.
Davis has claimed that he was in the front passenger seat of the Cadillac and handed a .40-caliber handgun to his nephew in the back seat, from which the fatal shots were fired.
In Nevada, a person can be convicted of murder for aiding and abetting the crime.
Among the four individuals present in the Cadillac that fateful night, Davis is the sole survivor. Anderson was killed in a shooting in Compton in May 1998, and before his death, he denied any involvement in Shakur’s murder. The other backseat passenger, DeAndre “Big Dre” or “Freaky” Smith, passed away in 2004, while the driver, Terrence “Bubble Up” Brown, was fatally shot in Compton in 2015.
Meanwhile, Knight, now 58, is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence for running over and killing a Compton businessman in January 2015.
Addressing criticism of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s handling of the investigation, Sheriff Kevin McMahill emphasized the importance of the case and denied any delays in pursuing justice for Shakur.
While Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, considers Davis’ arrest a significant moment, she did not commend the authorities involved in the case, stating, “The silence of the past 27 years surrounding this case has spoken loudly in our community.”
