Supreme Court supports Christian designer’s refusal to work on same-sex weddings.
The Supreme Court Protects Freedom of Expression for Graphic Designer
In a landmark 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Lorie Smith, a Christian graphic designer who has refused to create designs for same-sex weddings. This ruling emphasizes the importance of the First Amendment and the right to express one’s beliefs.
“The First Amendment prohibits Colorado from forcing a website designer to create expressive designs speaking messages with which the designer disagrees,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote for the majority.
The case, known as 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, involved Smith’s graphic and web design company and its clash with the state of Colorado. The court’s decision sets a precedent that protects individuals from being compelled to create content that goes against their deeply held convictions.

Justice Gorsuch further highlighted the potential dangers of Colorado’s argument, stating, “Under Colorado’s logic, the government may compel anyone who speaks for pay on a given topic to accept all commissions on that same topic — no matter the message — if the topic somehow implicates a customer’s statutorily protected trait.”
