State Department spokesperson makes a blunder, labels war in Ukraine a ‘strategic failure’.

State Department Struggles to Correct Statement on Ukraine-Russia War

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller faced an embarrassing moment during a recent briefing when he mistakenly called the war with Russia a “strategic failure for Ukraine.” Despite being corrected by a journalist, Miller repeated the same statement, further highlighting the confusion surrounding the situation.

This incident occurred just days after President Joe Biden approved the controversial decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine, a move that has sparked widespread debate.

“We believe the war has been a strategic failure for Ukraine,” Miller initially stated, only to be corrected by a journalist who pointed out that it should be “a strategic failure for Russia.” Miller quickly apologized and repeated, “— a strategic failure for Ukraine! Thank you for the correction!”

Miller’s briefing coincided with the Biden administration’s approval of an $800 million aid package for Ukraine, which has caused controversy due to its inclusion of cluster bombs.

Cluster bombs have been banned by several countries due to the risks they pose to civilians. When these bombs explode, they release numerous smaller “bomblets” that cannot be accurately targeted, potentially landing in unintended areas.

Furthermore, the bomblets often fail to detonate properly, posing a danger to soldiers on the ground. This necessitates extreme caution when traversing bombed areas and the presence of bomb technicians to handle any unexploded ordnance.

Biden’s decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine has raised concerns even within his own party. Democratic representatives, such as Barbara Lee and Senator Tim Kaine, have expressed reservations about the use of these munitions, citing the risks they pose to civilians and the international convention against their use.
