Investigation into Claims of Discrimination against Jewish and Israeli Students at Stanford University
A lecturer at Stanford University has been suspended following allegations of discrimination against Jewish and Israeli students. The investigation was prompted by claims that the lecturer downplayed the Holocaust and targeted Jewish students based on their backgrounds and identities during a discussion on the Israeli-Hamas war.
Stanford University has expressed serious concern over the tensions between pro-Palestine and pro-Israel students. In a statement, the university emphasized that academic freedom does not permit the targeting of students based on their identities.
“Without prejudging the matter, this report is a cause for serious concern. Academic freedom does not permit the identity-based targeting of students,” Stanford said. “The instructor in this course is not currently teaching while the university works to ascertain the facts of the situation.”
Rabbi Dov Greenberg, head of the Chabad Stanford Jewish Center, revealed that three students reported being ordered to move from their seats and stand in a corner by the lecturer. According to student testimonies, the lecturer then made comments linking Israel’s actions to the treatment of Palestinians.
During the discussion, the lecturer allegedly asked the students how many people died in the Holocaust, to which they replied “six million.” The lecturer responded by saying, “Yes. Only six million,” and went on to claim that “colonizers killed more than six million” to support the argument that Israel is a colonizer.
The identity of the lecturer has not been disclosed, and the investigation is ongoing.
