Stacey Abrams Is Co-Chair of “Defund the Police” Group

Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams has co-chaired another organization that has given out lump sums of money to black activists across the country, some of whom want to defund and abolish the police, despite claiming she does not want to take money away from officers.

Abrams, who is in a tight race against incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp, has tried to distance herself from the rhetoric of the #DefundThePolice movement. Her campaign has repeatedly said her views do not align with some of the more radical calls these organizations subscribe to, though her participation in them seems to indicate otherwise.

This time, it’s the Black Voices for Black Justice Fund. Abrams was announced its co-chair in April 2021 and released a statement that she was “honored” and “excited” to join because it “puts black leaders in the driver’s seat — with black activists on the ground who understand how racism plays out in their community defining both the problem and the solutions.”

The fund, launched in 2020, was created to address the lack of support that black-led organizations and civic leaders receive from major corporations. It was designed to invest in people and organizations “dedicated to dismantling systemic injustice, empowering disenfranchised groups, and cultivating a sense of community amongst leaders to drive change,” Newsone reported.

Past recipients include Jeanine Abrams McLean, vice president of the nonpartisan, nonprofit Fair Count; Wisdom Amouzou, principal of the Colorado-based Empower Community High School; and Paul Clifton, director of the Confluence Center, an arts center in Colorado that provides programming for underserved communities.

But there are others that could be problematic for Abrams’s claims.

STACEY ABRAMS POCKETS $52K FROM FAR-LEFT GROUP BUT INSISTS THEIR VIEWS DON’T ALIGN

In May 2021, BVBJ awarded $20,000 to Sharhonda Bossier, the CEO of Education Leaders of Color, who called for defunding the police during the George Floyd protests, Fox News reported Tuesday.

“It means nothing that these elected officials are expressing support for ‘peaceful protests,’” Bossier tweeted on May 30, 2020. “Their support doesn’t protect you. The police DGAF. The only support that matters is when they stand up to police unions, refuse to agree to contracts that provide more protections for police than the public they’re supposed to serve & defund the police/reallocate those resources. Demand action. Demand change.”

In May 2022, the group announced its fourth round of awardees, which included Kei Williams and William Jackson.

Williams, a founding member of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, has repeatedly called for defunding and abolishing the police.

Earlier this year, the Washington Examiner reported that Abrams pulled in $52,000 in income from a controversial foundation with a history of dishing out millions to those who advocate defunding the police and preach that racism is rooted in capitalism.

Abrams is a featured board member of the Seattle-based Marguerite Casey Foundation, but when asked about her affiliation with the radical group, her campaign clammed up.

Staffers did not respond to multiple requests for comment from the Washington Examiner but told Fox News that Abrams’s views do not necessarily align with the organization, though they did not provide details.
