Spanish soccer star accuses suspended official of sexual assault after unwanted kiss.
Spanish Soccer Player Accuses Former Federation President of Sexual Assault
Spanish soccer player Jenni Hermoso has come forward, accusing Luis Rubiales, the now-suspended president of the Spanish soccer federation, of sexual assault. The incident occurred after the Women’s World Cup final, where Spain defeated England on August 20.
Last year, Spain’s parliament passed a law that eliminated the distinction between “sexual harassment” and “sexual assault.” If Rubiales is found guilty of sexual assault, he could face fines or a prison sentence ranging from one to four years.
Rubiales claimed that the kiss was consensual, stating that he had asked permission from Hermoso and she had agreed to a “little peck.” However, Hermoso disputed his claim.
In response, Hermoso took to Twitter to express her disagreement with Rubiales’ version of events. She stated, “I want to make it clear that at no time did the conversation which Mr. Luis Rubiales refers to in his address take place, and, above all, was his kiss ever consensual.”
Hermoso further explained her decision to report the incident, saying, “I believe that no person, in any work, sports, or social setting, should be a victim of these types of non-consensual behaviors. I felt vulnerable and a victim of an impulse-driven, sexist, out of place act without any consent on my part.”
In response to Hermoso’s accusation, Spain’s federation (RFEF) announced that they would take legal action against her. They released a statement claiming that Rubiales’ account of the incident was accurate, providing four photos of Hermoso and Rubiales embracing as evidence.
Following his suspension by FIFA, Rubiales’ mother, Angeles Bejar, locked herself in a church and began a hunger strike, calling the treatment of her son an “inhumane witch-hunt.” She urged Hermoso to “tell the truth” and maintain her initial version of events.
Bejar argued that there was “no sexual abuse” as both parties had consented, as shown in the images. She questioned why her son was being subjected to cruelty and what was behind the entire story, asserting that he was “incapable of harming anyone.”
