Spanberger projects decisive victory over Earle-Sears

Spanberger wants to ‘crush’ Virginia race, sending ‘an extraordinary message to the rest of the country’

RICHMOND, Virginia — Democratic Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger isn’t just signaling that she will prevail over Republican opponent Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in the race to succeed Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R); she’s pushing voters to give her a decisive victory that will signal to the nation that Americans are fed up with President Donald Trump’s second administration.

“I’m excited because I plan on sending an extraordinary message to the rest of the country,” Spanberger told supporters while speaking at Virginia Commonwealth University on Monday afternoon. “I plan on ensuring that we don’t just win tomorrow, but that we crush it.”

Democrats are also hoping to flip all three statewide races in Virginia and expand their 51-48 majority in the House of Delegates. “What is it that we do here in Virginia? And the answer is, we flip some seats,” Spanberger told the VCU crowd.

Spanberger heads into Election Day as the front-runner in the gubernatorial race and is poised to become the commonwealth’s first female governor.

“Abigail is about to be a female governor of a state. I’m a female senator. We would not be here if women had not fought for 100 years to get us the right to vote,” said Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), who spent Monday campaigning with Spanberger.

Voters also told the Washington Examiner they expect her to easily defeat Earle-Sears on Tuesday, citing her policies, including access to abortion, running on an affordability platform, and supporting teachers, students, and education.

“I come from a family who doesn’t vote very often. I’m very democratic, so I think weighing my options … it was a clear decision,” said Laney Fontanilla, 18, a VCU student from Virginia Beach, about why she voted for Spanberger. “But I love what she does for the community and how she connects with every single member of it.”

“Honestly, I really think the younger generation is gonna surprise us,” she said of why Spanberger could win by double digits. “I heard that, like, VCU students voting went up a significant amount, and I know I got a lot of my friends to register, so I’m super excited.”

Mahagoni Hill, a 20-year-old VCU student, told the Washington Examiner that a Spanberger win on Tuesday would be “the best birthday gift that I can get.”

“She most definitely represents how I feel as a Virginian, an American, and a black woman, which is very interesting, because you believe that the opponent [Earle-Sears, a black woman] would be able to understand and almost like commiserate with my feelings and emotions on certain policies that are being enacted,” said Hill, who turns 21 on Tuesday. “But Abigail Spanberger, she just seems so very open. She seems like she is willing to actually listen to the people.”

However, Democrats are still worried that Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones may lose his race against incumbent Republican Jason Miyares after it was revealed that Jones sent violent text messages about wanting to shoot his political rival, then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert, and his family.

Linda Shapanka, a 73-year-old Richmond resident, said she thought Jones could win if Spanberger had a big enough win. “I think so, on her coattails. I mean, what he did was really stupid, but he admitted it,” Shapanka said. “He didn’t try to, like, say, ‘No, I didn’t do that,’ or excuse it.”

“I have no comment. I really don’t know where that’s gonna come from, but I do appreciate that he did, like, own up to the whole situation,” said Fontanilla about whether Jones could win.
