Spanberger leads Earle-Sears in fundraising before Election Day
Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger has outpaced her Republican opponent, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, by over $2 million in fundraising in the latest campaign finance reports ahead of Election Day. From October 1 to 23, Spanberger raised $11.73 million compared to Earle-Sears’s $9.5 million, ending the period with around $4 million cash on hand-nearly $3 million more than the lieutenant governor. This continues Spanberger’s consistent fundraising lead throughout the election cycle.
In other statewide races, Democrat Ghazala Hashmi raised substantially more than her Republican opponent John Reid but had slightly less cash on hand. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, a republican endorsed by Donald Trump, outraised his Democratic challenger Jay Jones by a large margin. Jones faced controversy over violent text messages sent in 2022, which Republicans have used to attack the Democratic ticket. Despite the controversies and GOP attacks, polling data shows Spanberger leading Earle-Sears by a substantial margin going into the election.
Spanberger leads Earle-Sears by over $2 million in fundraising ahead of Election Day
Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger outraised her Republican competitor, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, by more than $2 million in the last campaign finance reports filed before Election Day.
Between Oct. 1 and Oct. 23, Spanberger raised $11.73 million compared to Earle-Sears’s $9.5 million, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, which posted finance reports after the 11:59 p.m. deadline on Monday.
Spanberger ended the period with a little over $4 million cash on hand, while the lieutenant governor ended that same period with $1.3 million cash on hand — a nearly $3 million advantage.
The figures are a continuation of the fundraising advantage Spanberger has consistently held throughout the election cycle. In September, Spanberger raised $12.6 million and ended the month with $5.4 million cash on hand. In contrast, Earle-Sears raised $9.1 million in September and ended the month with $1.6 million cash on hand.
TRUMP TEPIDLY EMBRACES EARLE-SEARS AS OBAMA STUMPS FOR SPANBERGER IN VIRGINIA
In the lieutenant governor race, Democrat Ghazala Hashmi raised $1.9 million between Oct. 1 and Oct. 23, far above the $454,094 raised by her Republican opponent, John Reid. Yet Reid closed out the period with nearly $351,000 in cash, while Hashmi ended that same period with a little over $335,000.
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares was the only statewide Republican to outraise his Democratic opponent in October. Miyares, who has the backing of President Donald Trump, raised $8.6 million, vastly outpacing Democrat Jay Jones, who raised just under $2 million from Oct. 1 through Oct. 23.
Miyares ended the period with nearly $2.5 million in cash, while Jones ended the period with a little over $685,000.
Jones faced heavy criticism after the revelation that he sent violent text messages in 2022 calling for a former Republican speaker of the House to receive two bullets to the head.
Republicans have seized on the issue as a cudgel against the entire Democratic ticket, as the GOP hopes to retain control of all three statewide races. But most polls show Spanberger repeatedly leading Earle-Sears before the election next week. A RealClearPolitics poll composite shows Spanberger at 50.6% and Earle-Sears at 43.5%.
