Space Force establishes inaugural unit focused on targeting adversaries.
The Space Force Establishes New Unit to Analyze and Target Adversaries’ Space Capabilities
The Space Force has reached a significant milestone with the establishment of its first and only unit dedicated to analyzing and potentially targeting adversaries’ space capabilities. The 75th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron was officially activated as a unit under Space Delta 7 – Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance on August 11th. The activation ceremony took place at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado.
Lt. Col. Travis Anderson, the unit’s first commander, expressed the historical significance of this moment, stating, “Today is a monumental time in the history of our service. The idea of this unit began four years ago on paper and has probably been in the minds of several U.S. Air Force intelligence officers even longer.”
Advanced Analysis and Counterspace Capabilities
The 75th ISRS is responsible for conducting advanced analysis on adversary space force and counterspace force threats, as well as their associated architectures. Space forces refer to the space capabilities utilized by a country to support their joint warfighting efforts. On the other hand, counterspace forces, also known as space attack forces, are designed to deny the United States the ability to utilize satellite systems during conflicts.
The unit’s primary missions include analyzing, targeting, and engaging enemy capabilities. This may involve targeting satellites, ground stations, or the signals between them. Potential assets that could be targeted include ground-based lasers capable of blinding optical sensors on satellites, signal-jamming devices, and even conducting cyberattacks to hack into adversary satellite systems.
A New Approach to Targeting
Master Sgt. Desiree Cabrera, the 75th ISRS operations superintendent, highlighted the innovative approach taken by the unit in building its foundation and organizational structure. She stated, ”Not only are we standing up the sole targeting squadron in the U.S. Space Force, we are changing the way targeting is done across the joint community when it comes to space and electromagnetic warfare.”
During the activation ceremony, the unit’s patch was also unveiled. The patch features a Grim Reaper with a delta shape for a nose, symbolizing the unit’s mission and identity.
