Notably, members of the⁣ insurgent group al⁣ Shabaab frequently utilize⁢ TikTok and‍ Telegram to share ⁤information about their ‌activities. ⁤This ban comes shortly after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced a military offensive against al Shabaab, with the goal of eliminating the al Qaeda-linked group within the next⁤ five months.

In response to the ban, Telegram released a‌ statement ⁢affirming its⁣ commitment to removing terrorist‌ propaganda both in⁣ Somalia and worldwide. The platform⁣ also emphasized its active moderation of harmful content. However, TikTok and 1XBet have yet to⁤ respond ‌to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Internet service providers have ‌been given until August 24th‌ to comply⁣ with the order.

1XBet, known for its popularity in Somalia for betting,⁢ particularly ⁣on soccer matches,⁢ will be affected by the ban. Meanwhile, TikTok has faced⁢ threats of bans in the United States due‍ to alleged ties to the Chinese government. Montana became the first state to ban the app in May.
