Somalia Bans TikTok, Telegram, and 1XBet to Curb Spread of Indecent Content and Propaganda
In an effort to limit the dissemination of indecent content and propaganda, Somalia has taken the decision to ban popular platforms such as TikTok, messaging app Telegram, and online betting website 1XBet. The country’s communications minister, Jama Hassan Khalif, stated that these applications are being used by terrorists and immoral groups to spread horrific images and misinformation to the public.
Notably, members of the insurgent group al Shabaab frequently utilize TikTok and Telegram to share information about their activities. This ban comes shortly after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced a military offensive against al Shabaab, with the goal of eliminating the al Qaeda-linked group within the next five months.
In response to the ban, Telegram released a statement affirming its commitment to removing terrorist propaganda both in Somalia and worldwide. The platform also emphasized its active moderation of harmful content. However, TikTok and 1XBet have yet to respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Internet service providers have been given until August 24th to comply with the order.
1XBet, known for its popularity in Somalia for betting, particularly on soccer matches, will be affected by the ban. Meanwhile, TikTok has faced threats of bans in the United States due to alleged ties to the Chinese government. Montana became the first state to ban the app in May.
