The North Korean Government Expels U.S. Army Soldier Travis King
The North Korean government has made the decision to expel U.S. Army Pvt. 2nd Class Travis King, according to state media reports on Wednesday. This comes after King crossed the demarcation line from South Korea into North Korea in July, seemingly of his own accord. Since then, there has been limited information regarding his whereabouts and well-being.
Expulsion of Travis King
“The relevant organ of the DPRK decided to expel Travis King, a soldier of the U.S. Army who illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK, under the law of the Republic,” stated the report from state media KCNA. The investigation into King has now been completed.
It remains uncertain where and when King will be expelled.
Reasons for Intrusion
According to the investigation conducted by a relevant organ of the DPRK, Travis King confessed to illegally intruding into their territory due to his dissatisfaction with the inhumane treatment and racial discrimination within the U.S. army. He also expressed disillusionment with the unequal society in the United States,” added KCNA’s report.
Initially, King was scheduled to return to the United States after serving a two-month prison sentence for assault charges and undergoing U.S. supervision. However, he chose not to board the flight and instead crossed the border.
On Wednesday morning, a U.S. official confirmed that Pvt. King is now in U.S. custody.
