Brazil coach’s recipe for reaching World Cup final: Enjoy the game of soccer.
Ambitious Brazil Seeks Women’s World Cup Glory
Brazil, the South American heavyweights with eight Copa America Femenina titles, are determined to make their mark at the Women’s World Cup. Despite their past success, they have yet to win the prestigious tournament, with their best finish being runners-up in 2007.
Despite some early losses this year, including defeats to Japan, Canada, and the United States, Brazil arrives in Australia with renewed confidence. Victories over Germany and Chile have boosted their morale, and coach Pia Sundhage is pleased with the team’s progress.
“We’re really happy with the last two results because we gained a lot of confidence. We can just look at each other and we know it’s a little different from a year ago,” Sundhage told reporters.
She emphasized the importance of not taking anything for granted and enjoying the game. Sundhage believes that a combination of beautiful attacking play and solid defending can take Brazil all the way to the final.
“We’re in a special team and I think the keyword is ‘juntas’ (together). There’s a lot of energy in the room and it’s contagious. We have some young and old players, like Marta – that mix will help us win the next game,” Sundhage added.
Marta, a veteran player at 37 years old, could make history by becoming the first player, male or female, to score in six World Cups. Sundhage confirmed that Marta is fully fit after working with the high-performance coach, but she did not reveal if Marta would start the match.
“We’re not picking the two best forwards. We will pick forwards who connect with each other,” Sundhage explained.
As Brazil prepares to face World Cup debutants Panama, Sundhage assured that her team is well-prepared. She and her assistant coach have extensively studied Panama’s recent games to understand their tactics and formations.
