Sliwa slams Santos’s Trump-commuted sentence
New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa criticized former President Donald Trump for commuting the seven-year prison sentence of ex-Rep. George Santos, who was convicted of fraud and faced multiple criminal charges. Sliwa expressed his disdain by saying he “dreamed” of Santos being cellmates with Mayor Eric Adams, highlighting frustrations over the lack of political accountability. Trump referred to Santos as a “rogue” but argued that his sentence was too harsh compared to others. Santos’s release was supported by some Republicans, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene. Sliwa, a moderate Republican running against Democrat zohran Mamdani and former Governor andrew Cuomo, does not always align with Trump and has also been critical of Adams. Santos had been widely condemned after investigations revealed numerous lies and criminal activities.

New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa slammed President Donald Trump indirectly for commuting former Rep. George Santos’s seven-year prison sentence.
Sliwa said he “dreamed” of Santos being cellmates with New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
“My dream come true would have been Eric Adams, who is guilty of financial improprieties, and George Santos being cellmates,” Sliwa told Politico. “This is a bad sign. People who do bad things in politics, there are no consequences for them anymore.”

Trump commuted Santo’s sentence on Friday, relieving the former New York congressman from serving an extended prison sentence for his fraud conviction. Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) and others had lobbied Trump to release Santos from prison amid allegations from the former congressman that he had spent most of his time in solitary confinement.
Trump called Santos “rogue,” but said he didn’t deserve his sentence.
“George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,” Trump wrote in a message on Truth Social.
Sliwa is the Republican running for mayor against Democrat Zohran Mamdani and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He’s considered a more moderate Republican, and doesn’t always align with Trump.
It’s unlikely Sliwa will win the mayoral election in blue New York City, but his presence in the race could stop Cuomo from winning entirely. Cuomo said recently that Sliwa’s presence in the race makes it difficult for him to win. Sliwa has asked Cuomo to throw in the “white towel” if he feels he can’t win.
“It’s over for Cuomo, and he should do himself a favor and drop out,” he said.
Sliwa is also not a fan of Adams, who beat him in the 2022 New York City mayoral election. Adams, whose corruption case was dropped by the Trump administration in an alleged ‘quid pro quo’ for immigration favors, exited the mayoral race last month.
Adams is considering endorsing Cuomo for mayor, the New York Times reported.

Santos drew wide condemnation from Republicans and Democrats when he was indicted on 13 criminal charges in May 2023. Prosecutors and the media had unwound a web of lies from Santos over the years, including illegally spending donor money, lying about being Jewish, and fabricating his resume.
Santos Attorney Joseph Murray celebrated the former congressman’s release in a post on Santos’s X account. “God bless President Donald J Trump the greatest President in U.S. history!” he said.
