Sliwa hired security after rejecting $10M to drop out of NYC race
Sliwa says he hired security after rejecting $10 million offer to drop out of NYC race
Republican New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa said Wednesday he was offered $10 million to drop out of the race, adding he doesn’t “trust billionaires.”
Sliwa is running against Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo in the Big Apple’s election. He said earlier this month that he will travel with armed security because of “deranged” threats. Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels crime prevention nonprofit group, said Wednesday he’s never had armed security, even after surviving an assassination attempt from the Gambino crime family in 1992.
“Today, I walk into your studios here, I have armed security with me, former [New York City Police Department] cops. Why? Because I wouldn’t take the payout from the billionaires to drop out,” Sliwa said on The Breakfast Club radio show.
Sliwa said he was offered $10 million when radio host Charlamagne tha God asked for specifications. He also said “Eric got the same offer,” referring to sitting Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped his independent reelection bid last month.
Mary Sliwa, the Sliwa campaign’s media director as well as Curtis Sliwa’s ex-wife, told the Washington Examiner that his private security consists of “retired members of service” and was hired due to him not having enough police protection. She also said his current wife, Nancy Regula, is under threat, and his campaign insisted on hiring security.
The Washington Examiner contacted Sliwa’s campaign for comment.
Sliwa has adamantly refused to drop out of the mayoral race despite trailing both Mamdani and Cuomo in polling data. His response to requests to withdraw is, “I don’t surrender.”

New York City’s first 2025 mayoral debate will be held Thursday night, and all three candidates will be present. A second debate will follow on Oct. 22.
Adams said Wednesday he has three job offers he’s looking at after finishing his term, all of which are “my dream jobs.”
