New Street Food Trend: Spicy Grilled Ice
Fried Rice? How About Fried Ice?
I’ve always been a fan of fried rice, but fried ice? That’s a new one for me.
Believe it or not, fried ice is apparently a thing. A video posted by The South China Morning Post went viral, showing a Chinese street vendor grilling ice, adding seasonings, and serving it to customers.
However, the authenticity of this supposedly “native” Chinese street food is being questioned. According to experts, there is no such thing as grilled ice cube snacks in northeastern China, where the vendor claims it originates from.
Despite the controversy, people are intrigued by the idea. One customer even asked if they should eat the ice while it’s still hot, to which the vendor responded with a straight face. The customer tried it and exclaimed, “It’s so spicy! What a wonderful taste.”
If you’re brave enough to try this at home, you’ll have to watch the video and attempt to recreate the recipe. As for me, I’ll stick to flavored ice in the form of snow cones. Grilling ice just doesn’t appeal to me.
