Sheriff downplays reports that suspect approached Guthrie’s prior to disappearance

Officials in Pima County are pushing back on reports that a suspect in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance approached her home the day before she vanished. While the FBI released video showing a masked man with a backpack at guthrie’s home in the early hours of February 1, the sheriff’s department notes that doorbell images released earlier lack timestamps, so claims the photos were taken on diffrent days are speculative. The department described the suspect as an average-built male about 5’9″ to 5’10” tall, but no identity or motive has been confirmed. Guthrie’s family has publicly appealed for information and rewards have been offered for tips leading to her location or an arrest.Forensic investigators have tested gloves for DNA, but there are no matches in national databases so far.Earlier in the investigation, search warrants were executed and several people were detained for questioning, but no charges have been filed and Guthrie’s family has been cleared as suspects. The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information that helps recover Guthrie or leads to arrests. Guthrie, the mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, has been missing for about four weeks, drawing national attention.

Sheriff downplays reports that suspect approached Nancy Guthrie’s home before her kidnapping

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department pushed back against reports on Monday that a suspect in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie approached her home the day before she vanished.

Multiple outlets report that the photos and videos released by the FBI of the suspect caught on Gurthrie’s doorbell camera were taken on two separate days, rather than just Feb. 1, the day after the 84-year-old woman was last seen.

In a post on X, the sheriff’s department said speculation that the suspect was captured on video at Guthrie’s residence before the day she disappeared is unsubstantiated.

“We are aware that doorbell images released earlier in the investigation depict stages in different stages of attire, including with and without a backpack,” the department said. “There is no date or time stamp associated with these images. Therefore, any suggestion that the photographs were taken on different days is purely speculative.”

Video released by the FBI on Feb. 10 showed a masked man wearing gloves and a black backpack at the home during the early morning hours of Feb. 1. Authorities have described the suspect as a male of average build and roughly 5 feet, 9 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall, but have not confirmed any personal identity details or motive.

Guthrie’s family has publicly appealed for her safe return, and rewards have been offered for information leading to her location or to an arrest.

Investigators have also processed forensic evidence, including DNA from the gloves, which thus far has not matched profiles in national databases.

Earlier in the case, law enforcement executed search warrants and briefly detained individuals for questioning, but no one has been charged in connection with the disappearance. Guthrie’s family has also been cleared as suspects.
