Threats against federal judges surged by over 50% since last year
Threats Against Federal Judges and Prosecutors Soar, Reflecting Divisions in the United States
The U.S. Marshals Service has uncovered a disturbing trend of serious threats against federal judges and prosecutors, with a significant spike in recent years. In 2023 alone, the agency recorded 457 serious threats against federal judges, marking a staggering 52.3% increase from the previous year. This surge in threats prompted investigations, highlighting the growing concern for the safety of those involved in the judicial system.
According to the agency’s data shared with Reuters, the number of threats investigated by the Marshals Service has been steadily rising. In 2022, there were 300 threats investigated, while in 2021, the number stood at 224. The year 2020 saw 220 threats investigated, and in 2019, there were 179 threats that required attention.
Escalating Threats Against Prosecutors
Prosecutors have also faced an alarming increase in threats. In 2023, there were 115 threats that demanded investigation, a nearly 24% rise from the previous year’s 93 threats. These numbers highlight the pervasive nature of the issue and the need for heightened security measures.
The Marshals Service is responsible for safeguarding over 2,700 federal judges and more than 30,000 federal prosecutors. Director Ronald Davis attributes the surge in serious threats to the deep political divisions within the United States. Davis is scheduled to testify at a House Judiciary subcommittee oversight hearing, shedding light on the concerning trend.
“The threat environment right now that is causing me concern is when people disagree with the judicial process or the government, and that turns into those verbal attacks,” Davis expressed to the outlet. ”And that is the beginning of the process that threatens the judiciary and threatens our democracy.”
The increase in serious threats coincides with the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, which saw a series of highly politicized cases presented to courts and judges. Former President Donald Trump’s lawsuits, based on debunked claims of election fraud, further fueled the tensions. A previous investigation by a news outlet revealed 213 politically motivated acts of violence since the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot by Trump supporters.
Officials have also observed a rise in threats surrounding the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. These developments further contribute to the volatile environment faced by judges and prosecutors.
Since Trump’s indictment in four criminal cases on 91 felony counts, threats against the judges and court personnel involved have escalated. Judge Aileen Cannon, presiding over Trump’s special counsel classified documents case, received death threats, leading to the recent sentencing of the woman responsible to over three years in prison. Judge Arthur Engoron, overseeing the New York civil fraud case, has also faced “hundreds” of threats.
It is crucial to address this alarming trend and ensure the safety of those who play a vital role in upholding justice. The protection of federal judges and prosecutors is paramount in preserving the integrity of the judicial system and safeguarding democracy.

What are the potential consequences of threats and attacks on federal judges and prosecutors for the independence and integrity of the judiciary?
Litical divisions in the United States. He states, “We live in a time where people are very focused on their own beliefs, and if they don’t agree with someone else’s, they think it’s okay to go after them in this way.”
Divisions in the country have been particularly pronounced in recent years, with heated political debates and polarization. These factors, combined with the rise of social media, create an environment where threats and attacks on judges and prosecutors are increasingly seen as acceptable forms of expression or retaliation. The anonymity and distance provided by online platforms make it easier for individuals to act on their anger or disagreement with the judicial system, without facing immediate consequences.
Yet, the consequences of these threats and attacks on federal judges and prosecutors are far-reaching. They not only jeopardize the safety and well-being of those involved in the judicial system but also undermine the independence and integrity of the judiciary. Threats can influence the decision-making of judges and prosecutors, leading to a chilling effect on their work and the overall functioning of the justice system. If judges and prosecutors fear for their safety, they may be less likely to make impartial decisions or pursue cases vigorously, compromising the pursuit of justice and the rule of law.
The increase in threats against federal judges and prosecutors also raises concerns about the effectiveness of current security measures. While the U.S. Marshals Service is responsible for ensuring the safety of these individuals, the challenges posed by the growing number and volatility of threats require a reassessment of security protocols and resources. This includes not only physical security measures, such as courthouse fortifications and increased security personnel, but also enhanced efforts in intelligence gathering and analysis to detect and prevent potential threats before they materialize.
Furthermore, there is a need for greater awareness and education regarding the importance of an independent judiciary and the role it plays in upholding the integrity of the justice system. Public discourse and media coverage should emphasize the importance of respecting the judicial process and the individuals involved, even if there are disagreements or criticisms. Encouraging a culture of civility and respect can help deter individuals from resorting to threats and violence as a means of expressing their disagreement.
Addressing the alarming trend of threats against federal judges and prosecutors requires a multi-faceted approach involving law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and society as a whole. The U.S. Marshals Service, along with other relevant authorities, must prioritize the safety of those working in the judicial system and allocate the necessary resources to ensure their protection. Additionally, efforts should be made to foster a more inclusive and respectful dialogue, where disagreements can be voiced without resorting to threats or acts of violence.
The rise in threats against federal judges and prosecutors is a troubling reflection of the deep divisions in the United States. It serves as a reminder of the urgent need to bridge these divisions and promote a culture of mutual respect and understanding. The safety and integrity of the judicial system, and ultimately, the well-being of the nation, depend on it.
