Senate Republicans want an explanation from Wray regarding his possibly deceptive testimony on the anti-Catholic memo.
Senate Republicans Demand Explanation from FBI Director Christopher Wray
Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), are calling on FBI Director Christopher Wray to clarify his testimony regarding an anti-Catholic FBI memo. Recent revelations have raised concerns about the accuracy of Wray’s statements. Sens. James Lankford (R-OK), Mike Lee (R-UT), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Mike Braun (R-IN), Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Rick Scott (R-FL) have joined Grassley in demanding accountability from Wray.

“Director Wray must provide a clear and comprehensive explanation about the origin of this concerning memo and his testimony before Congress,” stated Grassley. “We will not allow the FBI to deceive Congress and the American people while public trust in the agency continues to decline.”
The letter issued by Grassley and his colleagues strongly condemned the alleged religious persecution of Catholics, emphasizing that such actions are contrary to the principles of the United States.
“Targeting Americans based on their ideas or political affiliations is always wrong and an abuse of the FBI’s power. It is particularly alarming when it infringes upon the fundamental rights guaranteed by our Constitution, including the freedom of religion,” the letter stated.
The letter also expressed frustration with the slow release of information and the conflicting details that have emerged since the FBI disavowed the memo. Grassley and his colleagues have been met with silence and evasion when seeking clarification from the FBI.
The FBI responded to inquiries from the Washington Examiner, acknowledging the failures in the production and approval of the memo. The agency assured that corrective actions have been taken, including new training initiatives, stricter approval requirements, and increased accountability for employees.
“We are committed to upholding the constitutional rights of all Americans. Our investigations focus on violence, threats of violence, and violations of federal law. We do not target individuals based solely on their First Amendment protected activities, including religious practices,” the FBI stated.

The leaked memo, which originated from the FBI Richmond office, caused outrage among Catholics and advocates for religious freedom. Critics argued that it infringed upon First Amendment rights. The memo outlined strategies for addressing threats of violent extremism within the “radical-traditionalist Catholic” ideology, including engaging with church leaders and potentially enlisting them as unofficial informants.
