The Senate unanimously passed a resolution to pay tribute to the late musician, Jimmy Buffett. Known for his iconic songs and carefree lifestyle, Buffett passed away at the age of 76 last month after a battle with Merkel cell skin cancer.
Despite his diagnosis, Buffett continued to perform and inspire his fans. His website confirmed his health struggles, which he chose to keep private. His last performance took place in July, showcasing his dedication and love for music.

The resolution, sponsored by Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) and co-sponsored by Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), aimed to honor the life, legacy, and contributions of James William Buffett.
“One of the great Mississippi-born musicians, Jimmy Buffett taught a generation of Parrotheads how to pass time in Margaritaville and enjoy paradise,” Wicker said. “Jimmy was a generational talent and entrepreneur who made his native state proud. With this resolution, we raise a glass to honor the life and legacy of this musical pioneer.”
Sen. Hyde-Smith also expressed her admiration for Buffett’s storytelling abilities and the impact he had on his listeners:
“Jimmy Buffett was a true Southern storyteller who was generous enough to share his piece of paradise with the world,” Hyde-Smith wrote. “In honoring him, we celebrate the man who, through his music, brought us with him on many of his adventures around the sun, from the Pascagoula Run to the shores of paradise, and we are all the better for it. I have no doubt his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) also praised Buffett’s influence on the Florida Keys community:
“A true giant of our Florida Keys community — the United States Senate just honored the life of the extraordinary Jimmy Buffett,” Gimenez said. “His music, vision, and entrepreneurship produced a lasting legacy in our community and introduced the world to the Florida Keys lifestyle.”
Buffett’s hit song from 1977, “Margaritaville,” quickly gained a devoted following and became an anthem for those seeking an easygoing beach lifestyle.
Jimmy Buffett is survived by his wife, Jane, daughters Savannah and Sarah, and son Cameron.
