Senate GOP hopeful OBBB can cross finish line with Vance tiebreaker

The article discusses the ongoing legislative efforts by Senate Republicans too pass a notable tax cut adn spending bill known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” with Vice President JD Vance positioned to cast a deciding vote if necessary. A lengthy session, referred to as “vote-a-rama,” is taking place where both parties propose amendments to the bill in hopes of reaching a final passage. Although some GOP senators remain opposed, there is optimism within the party, with key figures like House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith expressing confidence in the bill’s prospects. The legislation is intended to make the tax cuts instituted in 2017 permanent and faces potential hurdles in the House due to opposition from fiscal conservatives and moderates concerned about medicaid cuts. House Speaker Mike Johnson aims to secure approval prior to the fourth of July, but the mixed dynamics create challenges for reaching consensus.

Senate GOP hopeful they can finally get ‘big, beautiful bill’ over the line with Vance tiebreaker

Vice President JD Vance is in the hopper and ready to go should he need to be the deciding vote on Republicans’ mega tax cut and spending bill.

After 24 hours, the so-called vote-a-rama for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is still ongoing. The process entails Republicans and Democrats offering up amendments to the legislation, with the ultimate goal of final passage. But after the marathon session, Republicans still did not have the votes to pass the bill on Tuesday morning.

Vance arrived at Capitol Hill around 6:30 a.m. As of Tuesday morning, several GOP holdouts remain. Still, Republicans are optimistic that the Senate will ultimately pass the bill, President Donald Trump’s top legislative priority.

“I’m actually very optimistic,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) told the Washington Examiner around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. Smith, who was in charge of the tax cuts in the House, made his way across the Capitol complex toward the Senate, where he is set to meet with lawmakers.

“There’s all kinds of dynamics, it’s just balance,” Smith said. “You give in one area; you take in another, and we’re getting there.”

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) also expressed confidence that the legislation would pass in a post to social media on Tuesday morning.

“After an all-nighter and more than 24 hours of debate and nearly 50 amendment votes, the Republican led Senate will soon deliver on @POTUS’ America First agenda by advancing the One Big Beautiful Bill,” Cornyn said. “Gettin’ it done!”

The Senate bill in question is structurally similar to the House version of the legislation in that it makes many of the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent and includes other Trump tax provisions, such as no tax on tips.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) is ushering the One Big Beautiful Bill Act through the Senate and has been talking on the floor with holdouts such as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). But if the bill clears the Senate — with or without Vance’s help — it will quickly face obstacles in the House, where several lawmakers have come out against the Senate reconciliation legislation.

CBO SAYS ‘BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL’ WILL ADD $3.3 TRILLION TO THE DEFICIT

The Freedom Caucus has opposed the Senate version of the legislation, which will cause challenges to the bill’s passage from fiscal conservatives. At the same time, some moderates in the House have warned that cuts to Medicaid in the Senate version of the legislation could endanger their support.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has pushed to have the House give the final OK to the legislation before the Fourth of July, something that will be a tricky task given the contradictory dynamics at play.
