Sen. Schumer alleges majority wants gun control while Dems are divided

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said when the upper chamber returns in April, gun control will be a top priority. While speaking with reporters Thursday, he claimed Democrats are willing to work with Republicans on the controversial issue.

Schumer said if the GOP tries to block the left’s plans, however, they will push forward regardless. Meanwhile, it appears Democrats in the Senate are actually torn on the background checks debate with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) stating that the two bills recently passed by the House are taking things a step too far.

Despite this, Schumer asserted Americans want more restrictive gun laws.

“This is a different Senate, we’re going to debate and everyone going to have to vote,” he stated. “We’re going to figure out, as I said, the best way to make progress and move forward on that.”

While some members of the GOP are willing to compromise, the bills passed in the House face a steep battle in the Senate as they would need 10 Republicans to vote in favor.

Additionally, the gun control legislation is not subject to the “reconciliation’ process,” which was used to push through the massive COVID-19 package.
