How did Catherine the Great’s personal life and relationships impact her reign as Empress
Catherine the Great was born on May 2, 1729, in Stettin, Prussia (now Szczecin, Poland). Her birth name was Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg. She later took on the name Catherine when she converted to Russian Orthodoxy. Catherine was married to Peter III of Russia and became Empress of Russia in 1762 after his assassination. She ruled as Empress until her death on November 17, 1796. Catherine is known for her efforts to modernize Russia, expand its territory, and promote education and the arts. She is also remembered for her strong personality and numerous lovers.
