The crisis in Afghanistan has led Democrats to question the Biden administration’s plans or lack thereof. Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin (D) spoke with CNN on Friday to discuss the missteps the administration has taken in attempt to evacuate Americans.
Cardin went on to say he hoped the focus was first on getting people to the airport and securing a safe passage out of Kabul. He added once the evacuations were complete, discussions can then begin on the mistakes of the past two decades.
However, in regard to the immediate evacuation efforts, Cardin said the potential for collapse was information the U.S. was already aware of.
“We had information about how the Taliban could likely control the country. We should’ve been prepared to take necessary steps faster,” he expressed. “But as far as Americans are concerned, our information is that we’re getting Americans to the airport and out and that they’re not being harmed.”
What is happening in Afghanistan is a humanitarian crisis.
Today, our mission is to get Americans out of the country as quickly and safely as possible, along with evacuating those who risked their lives to help us and the Afghan government. https://t.co/6ex7B4xlTB

Cardin’s statement that Americans were not being harmed has stood contrary to the information coming out of the Department of Defense.
