Secret Services Fatally Shoots Burglar at Peruvian Ambassador’s D.C. Home

A suspected intruder in a Washington, D.C., home has died after being shot by at least two Secret Service officers Wednesday morning at the residence of the Peruvian ambassador to the United States, officials said.

The shooting occurred at a residence near the 3000 block of Garrison Street Northwest shortly before 8 a.m. after Secret Service officers responded to a call of a burglary, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The ambassador’s family was inside the residence when they said the man began smashing the residence’s windows, Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said.

Authorities arrived at the scene to find the man, who has not been identified, holding a metal stake and trying to gain entrance to the home, police said. Secret Service officers first deployed Tasers on the man but shortly opened fire after the man could not be contained, officials added. The man died shortly after, police confirmed.

Officers were transported to nearby hospitals to be treated for non-life-threatening conditions, although Contee said he could not confirm the extent of the injuries.

The incident is still under investigation, as officials are unsure of a possible motive.
