Secret ‘Funeral Screenings’ Of Canceled ‘Batgirl’ Happening This Week On Warner Bros. Lot: Report

Insiders are saying that “Batgirl” will have a few “funeral screenings” on the Warner Bros. lot before the canceled film is locked away in a vault.

Multiple sources told The Hollywood Reporter that an unfinished cut of the DC superhero movie is currently being shown in secret to cast and crew members who worked on it. “Batgirl” made headlines in early August when the studio announced it was being halted despite costing $90 million and already being in post-production. It’s the costliest movie to ever get canned.

Warner Bros. is opting to take a tax write-down for the movie, which means the studio won’t be able to make a profit on it at all. This basically eliminates the possibility of another studio or individual resurrecting “Batgirl” at a later date, which is what happened with “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.”

Studio execs did not give a specific reason for canceling “Batgirl,” but they did assure fans that it had nothing to do with the caliber of acting from lead actress Leslie Grace.

“The decision to not release ‘Batgirl’ reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max,” a Warner spokesperson stated at the time, as The Daily Wire reported. “Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance.”

The film’s directors were also blindsided by the news and recently shared how they tried to pirate some of the footage when they found out the movie would never make it to the big screen.

Director Bilall Fallah said, “[Co-directer Adil El Arbi] called me and told me, ‘Go ahead! Shoot everything on your phone!’ I went on the server … and everything was blocked. There was no way to access the film. We were: ‘F***ing sh**!’ All the scenes with Batman we didn’t get to keep!”

Fallah and Arbi agreed that acting quality was not the problem. They also expressed frustration that “Batgirl” was canceled before it got a chance.

“It was not a talent problem on our part, the actress, or even the quality of the movie,” Fallah explained to SKRIPT in an interview. “We were right in the middle of editing, there was still a lot of work to be done! It was not like the movie was finished. But they told us it was a strategic change. New management. And they could save some cash.”
